Personal Worldview and Models of Leadership
As nurse leaders, we encounter many situations which require more skills to deal with them. This is because as a nurse, one gets to deal with different varieties of people, the aged, the young and the youths. Nurse leaders face these critical situations and must learn how to cope with them. We have to look at others who have succeeded and how they carry the leadership skills. This will help us learn and identify new skills and methods for leadership. Benchmarking on leadership as a nurse helps one be able to counter the problems and challenges involved (Madsen, 2016). These help in adapting to a different setting and inspire others in their professions. Benchmarking on people and organizations doing better in the leadership in the field of nursing is a significant step to take towards the betterment of an individual’s leadership. Personal model of leadership when understood clearly by a nurse, it will be applied widely in the nursing profession.
The leadership model is more conceptualize at the organizational level, which is an exciting proposition. The personal model of leadership will be applied in several aspects of my professional setting. This will be used to mediate professional leadership and willing cooperation in the nursing field (Madsen, 2016). This will affect the personal interaction among the nurses. The particular model of leadership will act as a tool to connect people and initiate cooperation people will have better interactions among the nurses and people. This will help to take an organization to the next level as there will be advanced leadership skills across the field of nursing. The leadership model will impact on the profession in the providing direction, process, and coordination to people in the nursing to attain the goals of the organization.
However, personal leadership is among the models which champion leadership in nursing; it is involved with personal behaviour which impacts one on doing the leadership duties and responsibilities of professional leadership. These duties include trust, caring and expertise. The organizational teams are expected to have confidence in the knowledge of their leaders and have faith in the leaders. On the other hand, servant leadership involves putting the focus on adding values to the followers. This ensures that the followers get to be improved on leadership skills and hence improving the overall personnel in the organization. Servant leadership is different from personal leadership in the sense that personal leadership individuals learn leadership skills on their own, unlike the servant leadership.
Another leadership model associated with nursing is the transformational theory which has some different dimensions. Upon the learning of leadership skills from other people who have been successful in nursing, it’s clear personal leadership and transformational leadership models are related in different ways. Their sole objective is to improve the organization and to get better results overall (Kurt, 2016). However, they differ in a style in that the personal leadership model aims at developing an individual, whereas the transformation leadership develops the organization at large. The transformational theory enables the achieving of the organization’s objectives first before anything.
Despite the theories explained above, there is also another theory related to personal leadership. This theory is the rational leadership theory, which views leadership as a social construction through which precise understanding of leadership is initiated. Relation approach is one of the strongest and dynamic systems of administration. In relational leadership, one supports others to produce quality. In ancient times it was put in the perspective that individuals like people to thrive in relationships. This leadership style was supportive oriented and focused on behavioural style (Madsen, 2016). It was almost similar to personal leadership, but personal leadership suggests that individuals focus on their behaviour and better themselves for better leadership skills. The personal leadership skills involve people performing their leadership responsibilities of professionalism like the experts and sharing morals.
As leaders, we don’t work in a vacuum, we deal with people, and on the process, we have a culture which governs our philosophy. The worldview, which is the perception of the world is a group of matters that governs people perception and affects every person’s philosophy (Madsen, 2016). The world has different people with a different philosophy. Religion has a great impact on the philosophy of leadership, mainly on me. Religion and culture contribute to our behaviour and application of philosophy on our working. The leaders have obligations to adhere to the perception of people to achieve their expectations.
Religion has some belief practices values and beliefs which govern the society. Religion cultures determine the feelings of people, thoughts and causality concerns and also reflects the individual’s interpretation of the situation. This has affected my philosophy in professionalism and caused the adjustment on some methods which we use in nursing. The personal leadership skills and the people who are religious tend to contradict on the development of individuals and growth (Ghasabeh & Provitera, 2018) since religion and culture affect the behaviour of people and may force one to adjust accordingly in order to fit with the society. The secularist beliefs or quasi-religious, influence attitude and culture models. This has affected my philosophy since some religious matters don’t work well when it comes to leadership.
Another factor that has affected my philosophy of leadership is culture. Culture is the way people do things routinely; the norms that govern people on a daily basis (Ghasabeh & Provitera, 2018). This affects our interaction with people and the methodology used in leadership. Leadership cannot be done without people, and these people have a culture which in turn will affect the philosophy of working. Despite the significant overlap of culture, it changed my psychological way of handling the leadership philosophy due to the people I interact with. According to recent research, culture is the biggest agent that determines interactions. It is also a transaction for different worldviews and yield more understanding. This forces one to reconsider their philosophy before applying it in leadership.
Professional leadership is learned from other successful persons and should also be used to inspire others to be better their states. This is because leadership is a collective responsibility, and we have to understand the leadership methods. In my leadership skills, I will use the power of positive consequences to change the attitude of individuals (Kurt, 2016). I will ensure the negative attitude which controls the majority of people is reduced. According to a recent, the performance of people is influenced by leaders, and positive attitude leads to greater achievements. This will help to nurture the people and improve their productivity. I will inspire others and instil them with a positive attitude to ensure they achieve their dreams in their respective fields.
To inspire others correctly, I will also implement another strategy of being a behaviour-based feedback coach. Practice can lead to improved performance on if it includes behaviour-based feedback (Ghasabeh & Provitera, 2018). Always the result of an action determines the usefulness of the feedback. When the outcome of a person’s behaviour is observed the feedback of the coach is always necessary for better improvement (Kurt, 2016). This methodology will enable me to interact and act as an eye-opener to others which will ensure they achieve their goals. I will also employ practical empathy in making the difference in feelings and activating other people’s desire for success. This will lead to proper achievement by many individuals.
