What stands out in the article is the determination the author holds towards her goals and dreams. Before being awarded the MacArthur fellowship, Butler used to think and say to herself that she was going to be a bestselling author or rather her books would be bestselling. This was a dream even before she was famous, and her stories captivating massed. In addition, since age 11, she wasn’t dissuaded from the issues in her environment, including the tragedies experienced and racism. She stayed focused on her dream of writing science fiction novels. Concurrently, from the video interview, the personality of Butler as both an author and a person are seen through the way she explains her choice of fiction. She asserts that there are many issues in society that need addressing and finding solutions. Through fiction, she is able to provide solutions that she thinks might help. Also, by addressing the issue, she increases its awareness, bringing a larger forum in brainstorming the issue. She uses her writing as a way for people to reflect on their actions in society, addressing pressing issues. This can be attributed to the verses she read from the parable of talents. An interesting fact about the parable of the sower is that the book reflects on the society, and judging from the time it was written inclusive of the problems experienced in the fiction, it’s a direct replica of how issues are like now. The book reflected years in the 2020s. Now that we are in the year 2020, here are many issues like climate change and inequality among society. What Butler wrote about over two decades ago is coming to pass. Though she insisted that the novel wasn’t a prophecy, it surely is a true reflection of how our actions as human beings would affect us in the future and now.
