Perspective of Supervision

Supervision is emerging to be a point of concern in many organizations today. The critical point of interest is the way people perspective in which people understand what supervision is about. After reading “Social Work Supervision” article, I came out with several perspectives of supervision which include the following:

Supervision is self-sacrifice.  The supervisor works hard to meet the objectives of an organization or a group (Dong-jun, 2011). The supervisory job requires one to sacrifice a lot. The supervisor is expected to be concerned about the well-being of his or her subordinates. If, for example, a supervisee is having financial problems, the supervisor should try with all means he or she can to help the supervisee, this is not easy and requires a true leader and self-sacrifice.

Supervision means leadership. To be an excellent supervisor, one should have good leadership skills. A leader leads by example. This shows a good supervisor should be responsible and accountable. The way a supervisor carries himself reflects the supervisees. Hence the supervisor should lead by example. The supervisor should be competent and ethical. If a supervisor is competed, which is a great leadership skill, he will be able to correct supervisees whenever they go wrong to give them the way forward rather than concentrating on blame.

The key consideration of supervision is scope understanding. For supervision to go as planned or to meet the set objectives, the supervisor must have a clear understanding of the culture of the people supervising, clients, and the physical environment (Kadushin, & Harkness, 2014). As seen in the “Social Working Supervision” article, the supervisor needs to understand the culture of the community so that he or she can have explicit knowledge of what is expected from the supervisees to provide competent, appropriate and ethical services to the clients.

Supervision can be analyzed from a different perspective; all the perspective of supervision may not matter, what matters is supervision achieves clients objectives and create a good relationship between the supervisors and supervisees. If all these are achieved, this will be the best meaning of supervision as it will lead to the realization of set goals.
