Pharmacology of Nursing practice
Metoclopramide
- b) Implementation
Several aspects are considered when administering metoclopramide. In oral administration, the doses should be administered 30 minutes before meals and bedtime. Also, the oral tablets are not removed from until the prior dosing to prevent disintegration (Hood & Khan, 2020). Dry hands should be used to remove the tablets and immediately placed on the tongue so that they may disintegrate and get swallowed with the aid of saliva. In intramuscular administration, it is only indicated for preventing nausea and vomiting that occur after operation. The injection is done near the end of the surgery.
Direct intravenous administration should be done 30 minutes before administration of the chemotherapeutic agent, and the dose is slowly given over one to two minutes since fast infusion results to an intense feeling of anxiety that is transient (Borse & Saudagar, 2018). It is later followed by restlessness then drowsiness finally.
The non-pharmacological intervention(s) implemented to ensure that the pharmacological effect of metoclopramide is met include advising the patient to avoid the use of alcohol and other antidepressants when taking the drug. For children, the parents should be advised to give the right dosages to their children, especially oral solutions (Borse & Saudagar, 2018). The parents should be taught how to read the labels and administer the drug. Since the drug causes drowsiness, patients should be advised not to drive or even do activities that call for alertness until one fully knows the response to the medication.
- c) Evaluation
The aspects that are evaluated during the administration of metoclopramide include if nausea and vomiting that results after surgery have been prevented (Hood & Khan, 2020). The decrease in the symptoms of esophageal reflux is also evaluated.
