Dandyism is about using extravagant clothing to breach the common perception of sexuality, gender, and class. Besides, the dandy is a little old-fashioned and anachronistic individual. Though Dandy’s interest in self-creation is essential and he often works for it (Eshun 1). Dandies transform their bodies into signs by using the internet. Therefore, the mentality of dandy controls the forms of modern technology to subvert its meaninglessness and anonymity in society to be unique and fashionable. Besides, it develops an artistic vision of the individual which is both unrepeatable and irreducible, contrary to the digital pictures advertised.
Also, dandyism is a form of rebellion because it is nostalgic and punk-rock. It is a celebration of self-creation and individuality, over the commercial world of mass production and demands expectations. Furthermore, a dandy plays around with the presentation of gender. Great dandies resist society demands concerning the right outfit of a man. A black dandy, for instance, is an exhibition of louche Soweto youth on sleeveless pearls and suits (Eshun 1) challenge the traditional typecast of black masculinity.
In conclusion, the black dandy is aristocratic and extravagant. The characteristics of dandyism are a witty conversation, elegant mannerisms, and beautiful clothing. The black dandy often resists society expectations as they prefer unique clothing to uniformity. Therefore, the black dandy may be subversive artistic.
