In modern society, several instances are beyond the help of people within. Such incidences include insecurities and other crimes. Therefore, the need for the p[olice. The policing area is divided into three eras, according to American history. Each era has its strengths and weaknesses. However, the police profession is marred for lack of public trust. Incidences leading to loss of public trust include brutal use of power and corruption allegations. Therefore, there is a need for improved public correlation between maintaining p[ublic trust. This paper focuses on different policing eras, issues facing law enforcement, and highlights the importance of public correlations.
The modern concept of policing is traceable to the year 1829. The London police Robert Peel felt the need for the law to be responsible up to the phases of persecution. However, conviction and punishment phase should be the responsibility of another party. According to Robert, community policing should be responsible for the prevention of crime within society. According to American history, the policing era is divide into three eras. These eras include political era, reform era, and the community policing era.
The political era of policing took place as from 1840-1930. This period involved creating strong bonds between the police and the politicians. They aimed at creating better political grounds. The politicians were largely involved in the enactment of laws and discussion of police structure. The political era emphasized on creating strong re; the relationship between the police and the people they bar serving. This era had several strengths. Firstly, they facilitated police structure through legislative enactments made in state laws. The politicians worked hard enough to better the policing. It led to the establishment of law enforcement agencies. There was the fair treatment of all security officers since the political era impacted on the policing methodology. However, the era was bashed by several weaknesses. The police were overtly racist and very corrupt. They only tended to the people who paid them. As such, the police were only loyal to politicians.
August Vollmer influenced the reform era. He required police officers to attain a college degree. He was also responsible for motorizing the police so that they could patrol large areas with efficiency. During this era, the community relation of police was replaced by heavy reliance on technology. There were professionals brought in to fight insecurities and crimes. The reform era was also known as the progressive era. This place had several strengths. Among them include: there was reduced corrupt officers because they were professionals. They were trained professionals who were not racist. However, among the weaknesses of this era include: police getting used to perpetuate segregation ordinances. This was the major weakness at the time, and it prompted the rise of social movements.
Every year, the police department faces challenges which often defines the profession. This is because the profession tends to change in an instant. As such, the police leaders need to stay abreast of trends to respond to different challenges defining the profession. One of the greatest challenge facing the profession is the transparency of public records. There has been no precedent to protect the public servants regarding shares in their scope of duty. However, the courts hold that all information is p[ublic record. The police, however, have not been so good at availing their records.
Moreover, the profession is mallard by corruption allegations. Authenticating these allegations is a hard task. As such, transparency is an issue that has affected the police professional, which is overly affecting public trust.

Qualified personnel are left out, leading to the profession producing ineffective professions.

This is because before an officer of the law is punished, there needs to be concrete evidence. Therefore, there needs to be a need for intensive investigations. Unfortunately, the same officers being accused in the court of law are the same officers tasked with investigating their abuses. This means that they are at-will of confiscating essential evidence to make sure they emerge innocent. As such, there is a growing concern over the police brutality and the lack of justice for the victims.
There is a need for a strong mutual relationship between the police agencies and the communities they are operating. This ensures public safety and facilitates effective policing.
