PREVENTING UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES TO TODDLERS

Part 1

Unintentional child injury is one of the leading causes of death in different parts of the globe. There has been continued analysis and interaction with various sectors in dealing with the problem and developing a sustainable solution to the same. The article provides a critical analysis of the different unintentional injuries to toddlers within the Eastern Mediterranean Region, where significant cases have become reported to cause a higher percentage of deaths to toddlers. The study aims to bring awareness about the different injuries that would become visible to children within the EMR region and compare the same with the current member states and establish a greater understanding. The results identified and analyzed would become subjected to the creation of a significantly higher analysis of the world report generated.

The analysis employed the use of secondary analysis and focuses on unintentional injuries and specifically road traffic injuries, dawning, burns, falls and poisoning. It’s adjusted for countries from the EMR with the data collected from these areas a comparison point for the analysis. Evidently, from the article and its analysis, the results indicate that the EMR has a higher number of unintentional toddler injuries and which have even surpassed the world’s records as the region experiences greater threats to child injuries and all relate to a significantly greater impact to the toddlers.  The results from the secondary analysis indicate about 12% of all injuries come from unintentional injuries taking place for under 20 years took place in EMR with the number being 113 327 which is an estimated 19% higher than the  world rate.

Additionally, the projections of such injuries is continually distributed to different factors and these involve road traffic injuries 17.4, drowning 6.8, burns 4.5, and poisoning 1.6 per 100,000 toddlers. However, the values indicate a higher vulnerability of the boys that the girls. In conclusion, there is a clear indication that there is a greater influence of different elements that cause child injuries and deaths in the EMR and child injury programs need to become integrated with the different health strategies that need to become incorporated and utilized in the prevention.

Part 2

The home safety protocol is one of the most sophisticated approaches that a family would engage in identifying and establishing greater impact and influence to their children safety.  However, the preventive approach is key and creating a better environment for toddlers is the most important approach and creates a greater impact to the child growth and development in the long run. The safety issues identified within a home are mainly related to the parental care that is provided to the toddlers within the home environment and these may involve the following;

Fall

The home environment is crowded with different items placed in strategic areas in the house. However, these may pose a bigger threat towards a toddler’s safety within the environment and thus the need to interact better and identify the different elements that might contribute to such occurrences. The toddler injuries related to falling may be fatal as to the height of fall or the impact of the fall for the toddler. It’s the most common threat of unintentional injuries that children within a home environment may experience and hence the need to understand and take care of the situation better.  The issue is the most prioritized element in taking care of toddlers and creating substantial impact in reducing unintentional injuries. Its due to the fact that there are substantially great risks involved as compared to the other issues at home.

Burns

A different issue that affects a the child within a home environment would involve the continued influence and impact created by burns subjected to the toddler. Its unintentional injury and which has a greater amount of impact as compared to other issues within the home environment. However, comparing the three issues this would be the least prioritized as its can only happen when subjected to the conduct object and this is in situations where the parents are not keen while undertaking some tasks in the house.

Poisoning

Even though uncommon the risk is high as the toddlers move about their daily activities and come across a number of items that would be poisonous to them in the long run. Child poisoning may be a bigger challenge as the parents in dealing with and creating significant care and prevention. Among the three issues this would be a second priority as the toddlers may interact with different items and which may be poisonous in one way or another and to the parent unaware may be fatal.

The three issues relate mainly to the child growth and development in that they contribute largely to their understanding of different aspects within their surroundings. In environments where toddlers are free from falling has a bigger impact to their fast growth as they have limited injuries and challenges.  Additionally, when children are free from burns it does not affect their psychological growth as this is important in fostering continued growth generally. Furthermore, the issue on toddler poisoning is two way traffic and needs to be dealt with great care and consideration as it may cause internal injuries if swallowed or even death of the toddler.  However, all these in cases that they occur they reduce the rate of development and hence affect the toddler’s growth in generally.

Child safety action plan

The safety action plan for children within the home environment would involve focusing on the different issues that affect the child while under development and how these contribute negatively to their growth and development. Further, the plan would involve the following approach

  • Identify meeting areas that are safe for the child-Children do have a bigger picture in their mind in situations where they are involved and the family plays a key role in establishing the same. Identifying safe meeting points will create a greater impact in establishing a safety measures approach in case of an emergency.
  • Draw diagrams for the children as this helps them remember better and engage bigger through understanding what they ought to do and how well they have to approach the meeting point. It acts as a reminder and they do well in performing the actions required.
  • Dial an emergency response team and contact them in cases where the emergency is advanced and can deal with immediately.
  • Identify equipments that would help in understanding and creating an impact in case of the occurrence of an issue.  Practice continually to ensure that the children understand the approach and what is required of them in such situations while at home.

Barriers to plan

The barriers to the action plan and which may influence the actions created their effect to toddler safety related to parents would involve the following;

Parent education level– The literacy level of a parent plays a key role in establishing better safety action plan for their children.  Low literacy levels have a greater impact as there is high chance that the plan may not be successful.

Lack of time– Parents do not have much of their time projected towards child safety and this is mainly due to the issues and work responsibilities that may tie their time in performing other duties.

Lack of understanding the system- The childcare approach requires better understanding in order to create an impact to the children growth and development in the long run.
