- What is the legacy of the new deal today?
The new deal was enacted on the basis that the government is supposed to ensure its citizens (Vulnerable population) are protected in case of crisis. Roosevelt proposed this during his inauguration came up with this new deal to cushion the population then on the impacts of the great depression, which had left many jobless, it was also to serve in restoring prosperity and create new opportunities(“Unemployment Rate Great Depression, “2020).
The Trump administration has revisited the deal during this Corona Virus Pandemic. This came after many people lost their jobs due to the closure of many companies that do not offer front-line services. Trump’s government issues a stay home order, which has seen restrictions in the movement of people. People now can’t go to work, and having no other source of income are suffering (“Unemployment Rate Great Depression, “2020).
Employers can’t open their jobs because the government issued a ban on the reopening of businesses until further notice. This has made many businesses closing and laying off their employees as they can’t afford to pay them. Incomes are not earned anymore as no one is working; this has seen people lack money for rent and sustenance.
Trump’s government took a drastic measure to ensure that the citizens were cushioned from the hard times imposed by the coronavirus. Congress having been mandated to increase the money for cushioning the population during hard economic times. Food stamps have been introduced to ensure people are supplied with food as soon as their incomes deteriorate (“Unemployment Rate Great Depression, “2020).
The government has also used unemployment insurance to protect the population from suffering in times of crisis. Old-age pensions are also given to the old to help them sustain themselves. There has been an increase in the weekly unemployment fund in many states; it ranges at $600(“Unemployment Rate Great Depression, “2020).
- Where do you see the politics of welfare in action?
Welfare politics can be seen in different scenarios. The government has been quick to make use of the tools for rescuing the population as compared to the government during the 1930s. This new tool is expected to provide the people of the country more than enough to sustain them. Some may even get more than they were being paid before the Pandemic (“Unemployment Rate Great Depression, “2020).
It is disheartening to see that most people in the United States don’t have medical insurance (“Unemployment Rate Great Depression, “2020). This means that most will use the money sent to them by the government to pay for medical bills for their loved ones who have fallen victims of the Pandemic. The bottom line is that the united states government and congress are ready to assist the population further to ensure the vulnerable population is well-cushioned against the effects of this Pandemic.
The Trump government is proving that the country is ready to handle any aftermaths of the Pandemic. It has set up policies and tools to protect the population and get them through this period. Even though the economy has been affected by the loss of jobs by many Americans, the government is ready to assist the countries population to get back to their normal lives like before.
