PSA Plan Speech
A public service announcement is designed to sensitize the mass about a certain topic rather than advertising some products (Marsh et al., 27). The main purpose of PSA is to create awareness or influence the public view about an important issue such as cancer, covid-19, drug abuse, or early pregnancies. In this PSA plan, my topic will be on Covid-19.
Animoto is a fast and easy way to create videos as a way of growing businesses. It offers options for online video editing and creation. The creation of a public service announcement that requires the creation of videos and services offered by Animoto would be very useful in this project. Specifically, I would use their video creation and editing services to create videos for sensitization on ways of preventing the spread of Covid-19. Different technological softwares can be used in creating a PSA. In this project, I intend to use Wideo. This is effective software that enhances the easy production of video content regularly. Wideo allows easy dragging and dropping of ready-made templates leading to the creation of explainer videos (Hoechsmann, Michael, and Stuart, 321).
Before doing any work on designing the body of the speech, it is important to prepare by selecting the right topic, having a purpose statement, and formulating a thesis statement. In doing that, you create a base for the presentation by making essential decisions about what you intend to speak about and for what purpose. The function of a purpose statement is to state what you intend to realize. A purpose statement guide through the process of speech preparation. It expresses the topic and the general purpose of the speech in the form of action and in terms of certain specifics that you intend to realize. On the other hand, a thesis statement summarizes the main points of the presentation in a sentence or two, and give the audience a quick preview of what the whole presentation will be about. The main purpose of the introduction is to attract the attention and interests of the audience, align the audience to the plan and the content of the speech, and set expectations. Conclusions should restate the purpose statement, provide a preview of the main ideas, and restate the thesis statement. A conclusion reinforce the message and give the presentation unity and closure (Khan, 436)
Ethos is a defining character, which involves the ability to persuade the speaker. Speaker credibility is very important for any speaker since it builds a good rapport with the audience and increases confidence during the presentation (Hill, 154). One way of building credibility is by trusting, liking, and respecting the audience. Although as a speaker you may not agree with the audience and would like to change their opinions, it is important to show that you care about their feelings and their wellbeing. Secondly, you should show that you want what is best for your audience. Let the presentation be a way of benefiting the audience. Show the audience how your idea is going to help them achieve something important to them. Another way of ensuring credibility as a speaker is to align with the values of your audience. For your audience to change their values, you should first identify with them. The audience should see how the changes you want them to make advance their values. This gives them a sense of righteousness, therefore, advancing your course. Lastly, use evidence that the audience will find credible. The use of figures and facts, graphs and charts, and personal testimonials show some level of credibility to different audiences. Evidence that is appealing to one listener may be dubious to another (Johnson, 253).
The best way to deliver a presentation is by starting with an introduction. An introduction sets the mood and captures the attention of the audience (Khan, 351). First, I will get the audience’s attention with a personalized experience on the covid-19 pandemic. I will then identify the topic of my presentation and explain why it is important to me. I will then provide the background, followed by the purpose statement and then the thesis statement. Next, I will preview the body of the speech where I will show my PSA. Finally, I will provide a conclusion that will reinforce the message. My audience members will be composed of port managers, heads of schools, airport CEOs, and Hotel managers. I chose this audience because they deal with large groups of people and therefore need to be sensitized on how to prevent the spread of covid-19. In case these audience members fail to show up to my scheduled meeting time, I intend to send my PSA to them through their personal and company emails to ensure they access the message.
Since this is a health awareness presentation, I intend to film at a health facility. This will set the mood for the whole presentation. I will wear personal protective equipment such as gloves, gumboots, masks, and overalls. I will hire a filming company to film my presentation. This presentation will be uploaded to Canvas on May 17th, 2020.
