Part 1

Perceptions on conversations, questions, behaviors, and ideas

I notice with a lot of concern the campaign to perceive all races and cultures in a new light as this is the first step towards eliminating discrimination. The conversations held advocate for better teacher-student relationships that nurture the culture of tolerance. Diversity is inevitable in the class setting, and this means that the society has a variety of cultures and races. The ideas on tolerance and spreading awareness to the children are a resource that will yield into the future.

Myth about immigration

My view of immigration previously was that immigrants are smugglers and drug peddlers. This myth was made famous by members of my society who spoke negatively about migration and its impacts on the societal values. The presence of illegal drugs in the country was blamed on the immigrants who hailed from different countries and this made me develop a negative attitude to immigrants. This myth was demystified when I got to learn more about immigration laws, international relations, border patrols and the benefits of immigrants to the economy. I opened up my mind to the fact that immigration is a process that involves thorough scrutiny of persons joining the country and the reasons thereof. The procedure of screening immigrants ensures that the immigrants do not have hidden motives or products that are unacceptable in the new country.

Relating to the issues surrounding immigration today

I notice that the trends in migration have led to some social atrocities that have led to suffering. One of the trends in immigration today is the entry of terrorists who liaise with external forces that attempt to impose specific ideas into the political policies. The government system has had to invest deeply in immigration to ensure that there are no terror suspects who access the borders as their presence is a threat to national peace and tranquility. Terror attacks in the past have led to the loss of lives and destruction of property, and this gives immigration a duty to safeguard the country by screening immigrants thoroughly.

Challenges that recent immigrant families

Immigrant families face many problems in the foreign land as they take time to settle in the new country. On reaching the new state, immigrants have to learn and adjust to the norms of the modern society. Culture shock may accompany this as many may not blend in with the new culture easily. The pressure to abandon their culture and adopt the foreign culture is a challenge that is met with inner conviction. The culture shock applies to the little children who may need up in depression once they enroll in the new schools. I intend to work with immigrant children and families by providing them with forums that guide on the issue of tolerance and culture. These forums will engage people from different cultures who are unable to handle the culture shock that comes with immigration.

Part 2

Question

What are how society can achieve and impart tolerance in regards to race and culture?

My question intends to open a discussion on the position of tolerance in society and the impacts thereof. This discussion will engage the minds of the participants and they will increase the level of tolerance among members of the society. The question is open-ended so I anticipate a wide feedback from the participants.

I chose this question as it touches on the issues discussed in previous weeks on cultural diversity and how society can live peaceably amidst variation of cultural and racial values.

Lessons learned from my research

I have learnt the value of making an informed decision and the power of co-existing in society. This is derived from the fact that every person is dependent on each other and this means that tolerance is a necessary tool for healthy living. I urge my classmates to look up my research and internalize on the main points to increase their ideology on the topic of cultural diversity. My research relates to the issue on anti-bias as the ideas of cultural diversity and tolerance address immigration, career and education and other areas in life.

Response

The study on immigration and tolerance has been resourceful to me as a future educator, and it has equipped me with ideas to observe and pass to the learners. By encouraging tolerance and regard for new culture, I believe that my students will borrow these values and share them with their peers at home. This way the benefits of co-existence by appreciating other races and cultures will be the way of life for the new generation and those to come. I appreciate the readings and the videos provided as they have given me a better perspective towards diversity. Diversity is inevitable in the society, and this means that each member of the community has a variety of cultures to present to encourage multiculturalism. The values of tolerance and diversity will empower all children to consider themselves as ambassadors of their identity.
