Woman Have Curves
“Real Woman Have Curves” is a trendy firm that an 18-year-old girl known as Ana Gracia tries to strike a balance between going to further her studies in a college and falling for the need of her mother, who advises her to get married and have children. Later she will oversee a textile factory that belongs to the family. The whole firm is full of different social issues that affect the woman in society. In this paper, we are going to summarise a few social problems found in the firm. Before we proceed, it is good to define social problems. According to, social issues are general factors that affect people living in a particular society. Below are some of the social issues here.
Cultural Heritage – Culture is simply the norms that control the behavior of a particular community. Cultural heritage is a way of living developed by the community and passed from generation to generation (Blake, 2000). Here, cultural heritage is displayed when Ana García’s mother, Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros), wants her daughter to get married instead of going to school. The main reason to do so is to make sure she gets children that will be Carmen’s grandchildren. According to Carmen, society demands here to have grandchildren. To her, education cannot come before the desire to have descendants. That is why she even refuses point-blank when the teacher convinces her to allow the daughter to join the university. Almost at the end, there is a point where Ana decides to go to Columbia University. We can see her mother refuses to extend of not giving her final blessings as she goes to the airport.
Premarital Sex – In many cultures worldwide, Sex before marriage is seen as a social issue (Uecker, 2008). Young people are encouraged to wait until they get a partner and have an official marriage. Latino culture is not an exception. Ana must be submissive to the culture at all times. We have seen a point where Anna has a secret lover known as Jimmy. They meet while in high school. She decided to keep the relationship a secret, knowing well the mother will not buy such an idea. Only her grandfather Felipe de Alba who agrees to help her when she wants to see Jimmy. At some point, we can see that Anna and Jimmy are making love. At that point, they break the rule of purity.
Exploitation – We have seen that the Estela textile industry produces dresses and sells them to Mrs. Glass’s department store. The department store buys at a minimal price. On the other hand, they sell at a significantly higher price. At some point, Estela cannot afford to pay the factory rent. She begs Mrs. Glass to help with some advance payment to put off the bills. However, Mrs. Glass refuses. It is seen that Mrs. Glass only sees success as the only important thing in her life. She does not care about others.
