Reflection on the Law School Program

The Law School Program was on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, and was organized by Dr. Christine Rodriguez. It aimed at expounding student knowledge about law, and familiarizes those interested in pursuing it as a career. The program also involves visiting various law institutions, lectures and also come up with court games that jointly educate students and tries to give them real-life experiences on how the law system works. For students that were interested in joining Law School, they were offered crucial information that would help them realize some of the requirements to qualify for the course. In the midst, there was also a Bankruptcy Attorney who was able to offer advice on real-life lessons about law, and share some of the experiences that he has personally undergone while practicing the career.

I was fortunate enough to interview one of the faculty members that were present during the event. One of the major things that I was able to learn was that pursuing a career either in law is very demanding, and one has to be very dedicated to succeed. The purpose of the Law program was also aimed at giving students the basic knowledge about law to help those who may be interested in pursuing it or those interested in learning to get to understand how it works. It was required for students interested in pursuing it as a career to secure specific grades such as a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and undertaken English 101 and Mathematics 125. In most cases, not many students are exposed to this crucial information to be able to make a career choice, and this proved very helpful. The faculty member also informed me about the importance of visiting various law institutions, and practicing law games as prior preparation of what aspiring students will get to experience while practicing the career. Students that were interested in pursuing law as a career were being given the opportunity to offer assistance in a law office or a courthouse.

I also got to learn that the program was designed for students who had plans to pursue law as a career, as it would have them equipped with the correct knowledge and tools to tackle the career. The program had a curriculum which is consisted of eight multidisciplinary courses that are designed to help students kick start their careers in law school.  The Universal Law classes included Street Law, Civil Rights Law, and Business Law, which are transferable. The topics were chosen as they form the basis of the day to day activities that we go through and put us in a better position to know our rights and freedoms. I was able to realize that Law was very broad, and one had to specialize in one of the fields that are within it, such as specializing in criminal law, business law, administrative law, etc. It proved to be an educative experience and a factor to help various students decide if they wanted to pursue the career or not.
