Reflection Paper 3

The movie, the “Founder,” based on a true-life story, underscores the protagonist Roy, Kroc, who is a traveling salesman and later ends up as the founder of MacDonald’s. That was after his incredible discovery of a thriving fast food service industry, something that initially never existed. The revolutionary foodservice industry was run by two brothers at a small restaurant in South California. The MacDonald brothers had harnessed their shrewd business savvy into developing a successful business model that was beyond the scope of any familiar venture after being hit by the Great Depression and other hard knocks. Through their hard work and sheer determination, they turned their investment into a near perfection by making good money, gaining the love of their customers, and being contented with what they do. Kroc, therefore, convinces the brothers into signing a dollar franchise. Throughout persistence and relentlessness, he manages to elevate a talentless task into a tycoon, opening restaurants all over the country and thereby becoming the founder.

The founder, impressed by the brothers’ speedy system of running the burger operation in South California, saw a franchise potential of expanding ng MacDonald restaurants into large franchises, thereby pulling the company from the brothers and creating a multimillion-dollar empire. MacDonald brothers, albeit reluctant to make a deal, finally agree into making a deal with the Kroc and with caution insists that he first signs the legal contract in ensuring that he maintains their standard and that they retain the lions share of profits. At first, there is a struggle as Kroc takes credits for the brothers’ ideas and systems. He does not come up with any ideas of his own, albeit, delves on hijacking the purposes of the brothers and twisting them into his own. The primary concern of the brothers was their customers’ welfare, and the quality of their products as Kroc delves ion the realms of the pursuance of his success and is willing to sacrifice anything ion the quest of attaining it. His pursuance for success makes him open restaurants all over the country, and he finally meets with a shady contractor who enlightens him on how to screw his partners. He eventually cheats them, and they end up losing their restaurant to Kroc, without receiving a penny.

I think the founder portrays vast aspects ranging from positive to negative. The elements that I like about the founder are his heroic aspects, non-relenting spirit, coupled with his resilience in the quest of pursuance of his success that enables him to become a multimillionaire also has a great ambivalence that informs the hallmark of the drama. Those are some of the characteristics that I can relate to. However, I disliked his aspects of hijacking the two brothers’ ideas and turning them into his. As if that was not enough, he screws the two bothers by making them a shoddy deal. He later cheats them mand takes away their restaurant from them without offering them even a penny, an act of betrayal to his partners who end up regretting partnering with him. Those juxtapose some of the characteristics that I cannot relate to.

From the film, I learn that as a future business leader, I should be willing to explore new ideas by being innovative and refusing to accept the status quo and instead, allowing new ideas and inspiration from diverse fields. I learn that I should also think big by stretching the boundaries of possibilities and accepting new challenges, just like Kroc. Finally, I determine the value of selecting the right partners that add value in the premise, unlike the Kroc, who was only using the two brothers’ ideas and turning them into his own. That is coupled with careful negotiation of legal contracts for defenses and competitive advantages, unlike the two brothers who were cheated in the deal that they would get the lions to share of profits, only to be duped of their business, without a penny.

However, I think that there were things that were done right, like the brothers agreeing to partner with Kroc, opening windows for new ideas, and Kroc’s innovative skills and resilki8ance was also exemplary. Albeit, Kroc’s betrayal for his selfish gains was not the right way to do business, he should have instead left them with some of the restaurants, at least theirs, since most ideas came from them.
