Release of information

Release of information (ROI) is an important aspect of healthcare provision as it helps achieve and maintain high-quality care to the patients. Release of information is also essential as it helps in functions such as billing, research and reporting of the patient. ROI is governed by a set of laws and regulations that determine who, when, where, how and what information should be released, so as to ensure that this sensitive information is protected. With more patients wanting to access their records and asking for their medical information, ROI is becoming an essential aspect of healthcare today. The release of information is a complex process that can be grouped into five major sections. The first step is logging, tracking and verifying the requests that are sent. The second step is retrieving the patient’s information from the Patient Protected Health Information (PHI), protecting the sensitive information and releasing only the authorized information. the final step is completing and invoicing the request. While these steps seem to be simple and easy to follow, they are mode detailed.

Patients have a right to access their own medical information and records under the Health Information Act. The request should be made in writing and it allows for 30 days before the response is made. The first step is to Fill out an authorization form giving one medical provider permission to share the records with another facility. The second step is to mark on the information that one needs to be shared and the last step would be to pay any fees as a result of these activities. It is important to ask the new facility the specific records they need as they may be in hundreds of pages. It is also vital to get information from the previous facility on personal responsibilities when filling the authorization form. It is also essential to provide as much information as possible when filling the form.

There are certain situations when a release of information form is not necessary. These situations include; when general information about the patient is required when the information is being shared with other entities that are part of the patient’s treatment and also when the information is being shared with specialty consultants or laboratory technicians. A release of information form is also not required in the case where release had been requested by the court. Also, the form is not required if the information helps maintain public health and safety. This is specifically in the case of disease outbreaks.
