Reply of the novel discussion
Hi Andrew? I have read the discussion that you have posted, and I am amazed by how you have mastered the novel. It is true that Gilbert Grape is excited to leave Endora and is motivated by several things, including the performance of his childhood friend, Lance Dodge. This is also supported by his growing anxiety to leave Endora. As you have mentioned in your discussion, Gilbert is continually saying that he will leave Endora, meaning that he is tired of the place. I also think that the journey of Gilbert is tied to several significances, one being to adopt a new way of life and thinking, as you have mentioned in your discussion. Those who have read the book have noticed how Gilbert has stagnated for long because of the demands of his family. Leaving Endora is not only for adventure but also a chance for him to grow. Gilbert deserves a chance to pursue his path, and this is very clear in your discussion.
I agree with you that leaving Endora is an opportunity for Gilbert to evolve as a new creature, both physically and mentally. Leaving Endora will also make him plant a smile on his face because, to him, this is an achievement. Again, the description that Gilbert makes about Endora is clear proof that he is tired of the place where he germinated from. For example, Gilbert describes Endora as a place where “Old movie theater closed down, so we have to drive sixteen miles to Motley to see movies” (Chapter 1). This quote directly relates to your discussion as it offers some of the reasons why Gilbert is not ready to keep on staying at Endora. Thank you for the life experience that you have shared with us. I was too faced with such a dilemma, and I can share it with you later. Lastly, I think the Grapes have adapted and must be doing good. Let us hope that Gilbert will not forget Endora because it is where he grew up.
