Responding to “Am I Writing this Play or Living it” by Victoria Stewart
Victoria Stewart writes the article, “Am I writing this Play or Living it” about how the coronavirus pandemic is generally affecting the field of playwriting. Victoria narrates about his aging parents and his husband on how they are living in these difficult times of the pandemic. Things such as social distancing are affecting everything in theater activities. Stewart goes ahead to explain how she is careful with her parents’ health status as long as the pandemic is concerned. She then explains how her husband complains about the itching throat. The pandemic is making the economy of the country look bad, especially in the department of the theatre.
From the story, I find everything interesting, especially when the author describes the economic consequences of the pandemic. It is also interesting when Victoria explains how she is taking care of his family by following the simple rules given by the authorities. Victoria is much concerned with his parents to the extent that she tells them not to go shopping in the last days before there was the order of staying at home. One of the things that Victoria stresses is how the pandemic and wonders have disrupted the theatre activities if the play she is writing would be disposed of. Victoria clearly explains the motive towards writing the play and which is helping the people stay safe at home. She says that there is no essence of playing the play outside the house since it would be like risking the health status of many people all over the country. She gives an example of her parents dying in the name of the play that she would even not think about it even after the pandemic is over.
Victoria Quotes, “So what is my game in writing this play about my parents? Even if we all make it through this-even if, in a year, theatre somewhat has a comeback… (Stewart, 1)” The phrase means that during this time, we should follow the instructions to stay healthy, and theatre will come back after some time.
