Review of Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

In his desire to escape the world of modernity, Dutch Post-impressionist Vincent Von Gogh painted The Starry Night in 1889.  During this time, he was voluntarily staying at Saint-Remy De province mental asylum, where he got the idea of the painting. In this piece, Gogh portrays the night view from his sanitarium room perfectly. It is said that Vincent was always amazed by the mood created by sunset during the night; he believed it was the perfect time for creativity and self-creation. Just like his other paintings, the Starry Night was all about how someone can play around with colors to come up with unimaginable art. Today, it is the most recognizable and detailed piece for its colorful, unique, and illuminated scenarios. He was indeed a talented artist.

In the piece, we can see a swirling wind, orange-yellow balls representing stars and the moon, a small beautiful village as well as shades of the white coil to demonstrate clouds. There is also a church with a steeple that overshadows the town. At the forefront of the painting, there is a cypress tree that gives the art a great sense of depth. When we look closely, we can pinpoint the center of the two waves in the sky that are perfectly aligned with the drop paint between the hills. The village is painted and bordered in black, but we can find comfort in the dim light coming through the windows. He used brown, grey, and blue colors to paint the village; this; adds intensity to the accuracy of the picture.  Vincent also included the sky and air that form a pattern that looks like a spiral or a whirlwind; he then painted it in such a way that sky seems to blend with the hills; it makes it look like it may have been cold and windy outside. The atmosphere is full of clouds with wavy movements that go beyond what the human eye can see. On the contrary, the village seems to be calm quiet.

Vincent used a canvas of size 29 X 36. The colors in the piece are mostly different shades blue as well as brown, green, white, and green. He used oil to create lines and patterns, which created a unique flow and rhythm. He made it look like the features in the piece have a life of their own. Vogh used principles of balance, proximity as well as contrast and contrast to design the painting. The ends of the picture are not identical to one another; thus, making is asymmetrical. He used contrast to achieve balance and technique of proximity to create spirals in the sky and its components. However, Vincent greatly emphasized on proximity and repetition to come up with the design.

However, upon deep analysis of the painting, we can see that the precision color represents Gogh’s sickness. He was hallucinating and having mental problems, the reason why he was in an asylum. Through his painting, Vincent tries to accept reality. The stand cypress alone depicts his isolation and loneliness. The cypress trees are also associated with the cemetery. This indicates that Gogh comes into terms with the fact that he was going to die. The mix of colors indicates the calmness in the environment he resides and the level of loneliness he experienced. It was during this time that he found religion. Although the village seemed dull and gloomy, the wavy sky and swirling winds look like they are dancing. The moon and the stars were big and very bright, unlike the dim light that came through the windows of the houses. It demonstrates that there is something bigger and powerful than the village.
