RFID IN PACKAGE TRACKING
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a common technology in the Intermodal transport system since it aid in the tracking of cargo under transportation. The development of RFID technology has been able to reduce the cases of cargo lose when they are being shifted from one mode of transport to another. The RFID is a technology where the goods under transportation are fitted with a tag containing the information of the goods and the tag is attached to a given information system.
Currently, RFID is used to track goods while they are being transported. While preparing for the transport of goods, the RFID tags are fitted on the goods packaging and the information of the goods which includes a description and the goods and destination. A special code is sent to the buyer which he or she uses to track the goods. The information of the goods is stored in a computer system to enable tracking of the goods until they reach their destination.
The potential use of RFID will be diversified to other fields other than the tracking of packages in the intermodal transport system. In future, researchers have identified the possible use of RFID technology in fields such as healthcare sectors, food and retail sectors. In the healthcare sector, RFID can be used to track patients within the hospital. Patients can give wristbands that contain the RFID chips which are fed with the patients’ details. Such would allow the nurses to easily track the patients while taking care of them.
