Romanticism

Romanticism has been described using a number of labels. Some of these labels include asserting it to be a movement, an aesthetic style, and an attitude of mind. As a movement, romanticism was exemplified by creating a revolt against political and social norms that were common during the Enlightenment Age. It also happened during a distinct period making it a movement which had huge influence on other art styles that would follow. Romanticism can also be classified as an aesthetic style. The label comes from the application of emotions and feelings. Use of strong senses was important in helping artists relay the images and messages they wanted using art.

It has also been labelled to be an attitude of mind since it promoted individual imagination more than any other movement. Promoting individual imagination led to instances where it allowed more freedom from artists who were no longer constrained to the classical notions and rules in art. Artists were free to imagine anything and overcome any barriers that existed before. As a result, it promoted the attitude of the mind.

I think romanticism is not uniquely a western phenomenon. The assertion is one that has been made by many artists and historians. Most base their statements on the fact that it develop in the west. However, it was adopted in other regions and this led to its spread in other places across the world (Day, 2012). Having its background in the west should thereby not be used to suggest that it is a uniquely western phenomenon. The same can also be said another other art movements that developed from other regions. Each movement possesses huge influences across the world regardless of whether they developed.
