Ryerson Post-Op Pediatric Clinical Simulation: Debriefing Questions

  1. What were your thoughts and feelings as you assumed the role of the pediatric nurse during the simulation?

My thought and feeling as a pediatric nurse were to achieve as well as restore the health status of Sasha through following the set principles of practical medical approaches.

  1. Please summarize what happened during the scenario from your perspective.

The doctor gave me a report on tests and medication that was administered to Sasha before assigning me as the patient-nurse. The mother came to look for her kid and reported to me that Sasha was not well according to her. I assessed Sasha’s level of consciousness to tell the health state of the patient better.

  1. What did you learn concerning establishing a therapeutic nurse-client relationship with Sasha and his mom?

I learnt that patience, critical observation and effective response are necessary while attending a client. Further, I learnt that you must not be tempered and should understand the client behaviour is due to the pain they are undergoing. I also learnt that immediate response is necessary to the safe life of the client.

  1. Not everyone works their way through this scenario perfectly. What learning can you take from the incorrect decisions/responses you made?

The decisions I made helped to understand my weak areas and what I need to grasp the right approaches as a nurse. I thus believe I need more practice and attention to acquire relevant skills for a nurse.

  1. Did you do the scenario more than once? If yes, what did you learn from repeating it?

Yes. On repeating the scenario once more, I realized that I made correct decisions. This made me realize exposure is essential in nursing profession and experience is gained more and on facing challenges and problem-solving through critical thinking.

  1. What did you learn concerning completing post-operative care for a pediatric patient?

I have learnt that excellent communication is necessary between the team members to achieve client health back. I also learnt that sometimes it is essential to make individual decisions by you even after the client is against them for their safety. The client is complaining of your arrangement due to the pain they are undergoing, but that should not prevent you from taking the appropriate healthcare step.

  1. Reflect on the following learning outcomes:
  • Complete an evidenced-based post-operative assessment of a pediatric patient.

The aspect of pain control on a pediatric patient is essential.

  • Apply pain management care principles to a pediatric post-operative patient.

FLACC scale is a vital pain management tool for kids, and as it focuses on behavioural change to assess a client.

  • Demonstrate therapeutic communication to facilitate family-centred care.

Explain to the family member reason for performing a given action in the process to treat client free and openly. This allows easy follow on the client’s health state as they receive medication.

  • Demonstrate correct drug calculations related to administering IV medications to a pediatric patient.

Determine the child’s weight, then multiply (weight x Dose) per Kg of the drug required to be administered (“Selected Area – Virtual Healthcare Experience”, 2020).

  • What were your key learning points?
  1. Proper communication
  2. Drug calculations
  • Client assessment
  1. If a similar situation arose in the future, what will you take away from this simulation to incorporate into your clinical practice?

In future, I will assess client state immediately without delay for their safety.

  1. What questions remain unanswered for you concerning this pediatric post-operative simulation scenario?

How should one handle client moods without failing at his or her duties at all time?
