Scores Of Children Are Living In Orphanages In Haiti- Georgette Mulheir Says It Isn’t Because They’re Orphans.

The situation in Haiti’s 760 orphanages is getting worse, with 32,000 children cuddled in one of the most significant children care centers in Haiti. And to think that about 80% of these children have parents who desire to live with them is even more heartbreaking. The parents would want to have their children under their care but do not have access to basic social amenities like water, health, and education.

There are thousands of orphanages in Haiti due to massive displacements caused by the 2010 earthquakes. However, according to Georgette Mulheir, it is surprising that the Haitian government believes that most of these children have parents and aren’t orphans.

Nonetheless, the assertion by the Haitian government isn’t surprising to us at all. As Lumos, we are well aware that of the estimated eight million children who live in orphanages worldwide, most of them have parents and would quickly unite with them.

As the Global Strategic Advisor of Lumos, Georgette Mulheir is spearheading Haiti’s initiative to ensure these children have access to clean water, proper food, and medical services they needed. However, the next massive priority of Lumos is to ensure these children eventually unite with their parents.

More importantly, Lumos is working around the clock to globally get rid of these children’s orphanages by 2030 in Haiti and 2050.

According to Georgette Mulheir, many people don’t appreciate that children will always come in droves if you build orphanages. Comprehensive research has shown that most children raised in orphanages risk having health and personal development problems.

As the Global Strategic Advisor to Lumos, I advocate for a world where there aren’t orphanages. And many of these orphanages in Haiti are set by NGOs, and the government is slowly beginning to accept that reform process.
