Self-efficacy is a belief held by an individual that helps determine how one can put a plan into actions, or rather it is believing in one ability to succeed in a particular situation (Caldwel, 2016). According to Banduri individuals with a sense of self-efficacy can establish themselves from failure and are able to approach issues in terms of what they can handle, instead of being worried about what might go wrong. Self-efficacy comprises a person’s abilities, cognitive skills, and attitudes. It plays an essential role in how we understand situations and how we respond to different situations.

How to develop self-efficacy

According to Bandura, there are four ways of developing self-efficacy: mastery experiences, social modeling, psychological responses, and social persuasion.

Social persuasion

Bandura believed that people could be convinced to accept that they possess skills, and they are capable of succeeding. A good example is when someone said something good and encouraging as a result, a goal was achieved. Encouraging others helps them win self-doubt and give their best effort towards accomplishing the tasks ahead.

Psychological responses

How we react to situations, our responses, and reactions play a significant role in self-efficacy.

Physical reactions, emotions, and stress levels affect how an individual feels about their abilities in a particular situation. For instance, there people who become nervous before they address a crowd, this may lead to building a weak sense of self-efficacy in such cases. People can increase their sense of self-efficacy by minimizing stress and elevating their mood when in a challenging situation.

Mastery experiences

According to Bandura, executing a task successfully improves individual’s self-efficacy. Our self-efficacy can be weakened by failing to undertake our task successfully. Mastery experience is one of the best ways of building a strong self-efficacy.

Social modeling

Watching other people completing a task successfully is another way of developing self-efficacy. It raises observers’ belief that they can also have the ability to achieve a set goal. An example is a student who gets motivated to work hard in class after seeing one of the classmate being awarded for passing a test.

How self-efficacy affects job performance

Employees in an organization have the ability to identify goals they wish to achieve, what they would like to change, and things they would like to accomplish. Self-efficacy plays an essential role in how destinations, challenges, projects, and tasks will be addressed. Self-efficacy is more important than having knowledge, and experience. Without self-confidence a worker cannot make tough decision, have the authority to lead meetings, communicate with people and be ready to accept responses especially if they are constructive.
