Sesame Street Questions

a)

Julia is a character in the video depicted as a child with autism. Julia portrays the character of a kid with autism very well, as evidenced by her interaction and communication. When communicating, Julia does not say a complete sentence or make congruent and complete statements. Julia behaves this way to show how people, especially children with autism, experience difficulties when it comes to communication. They can hardly speak well, and a majority of these kids make affirmations or agreements with only one or two words when conversing. As a result, children with autism appear to have difficulties when it comes to interacting with others. This situation is evidenced by Julia, where she allows her counterpart Abby to dominate almost the entire interaction.

b)

Julia’s behavior was handled very well by her friend Abby. Abby treats Julia with a lot of concerns. Abby does not ignore Juslia because the autistic kid cannot speak or converse well. Instead, Abby shows Julia that she is attentive to her all along. Abby shows her attentiveness to Julia by answering her questions like when the former asks “bubbles?” the latter responds, “these are bubbles.” Julia’s behavior is also treated with a welcoming heart by Abby. Abby shows a lot of compassion to Julia and even helps her to pop the bubbles in the air. Abby also embraces Julia with a hug and tells her that they are friends who should be helping each other the way they are doing.

Your opinion on the Introduction of Julia to Big Bird

c)

The introduction of the Big Bird signifies people with unique attributes or who are different, and how we relate with them in society. From the video it is evident that it becomes difficult trying to integrate and mingle with such people. This situation is demonstrated by Julia’s inability to talk and interact with the Big Bird. The Big Bird is asking questions like requesting to see Julia’s painting, but the latter fails to respond. The video also emphasized that people with special needs like autism find it more difficult to interact with such people due to their conditions. However, by persistently showing people, especially individuals with special needs the importance of valuing everyone usually bring positive results. This scenario is shown where Allan continuously teaches the Big Bird about the condition of Julia and how they should relate. In the end, the Big Bird and Julia become friends and appreciate each other through a flower and an appreciation.

d)

This video is an amazing one since it is objective in displaying its contents and goals. The author wanted to show the life of people, particularly children with autism. The video achieves this goal by showing how one of the characters, Julia, is facing challenges like the inability to talk. This inability is a major sign and symptom of people with autism. Also, the video is also objective in explaining how we should treat people with autism. Showing concern and listening to this group of people is a vital way of treating people with autism. The source achieves this objective by portraying a character, Abby, who listens and responds well to Julia is depict a child with autism. I think the video also challenges us on how to love everyone, including those with disabilities unconditionally. The source presents this concept by introducing Abby, who loves Julia without compromising her difficulties, like in not conversing well.

Factors that may influence children from different races/cultures in the identification/diagnosis of ASD

There are key factors that influence children from different races and cultures when identifying and diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Language is one of the key factors, and it becomes a problem when professionals cannot communicate properly with the targeted child or their parents. This situation usually happens due to the language barrier among the involved parties. Religion is another key factor that influences children from different races and cultures in the identification and diagnosis of ASD. Some races and cultures are guided by traditional religious doctrines that do not recognize autism and other illnesses as health conditions. As a result, healthcare professionals face challenges trying to sensitize such communities about the condition before a kid can be diagnosed. It is also difficult to identify a child with the condition since a majority of them are usually isolated.

Differences in family adaptation to the autism diagnosis?

The idea of having various social classes create differences in family adaptation to the autism diagnosis. A high-class family, for instance, can adapt easily when their kid is undergoing autism diagnosis as compared to those living in the middle or low-class levels. This is because a high-class family is capable of meeting all the medical and therapy expenses due to the availability of financial resources. However, a lower or middle-level family may find difficulties adapting due to the unavailability of enough finances and other resources required for diagnosis. The level of preparedness, especially in dealing with shocking news such as those of an illness varies among families. A well-prepared family or with the ability to handle such news will adapt easily as compared to the unprepared ones.
