SICKO Film Review

This is a documentary film by Michael Moore which was released back in 2007. The film is all about an investigation done in different nations that provide universal health care. The countries visited by Michael include Cuba, Canada, the United States, France and the United Kingdom. After watching this movie, one obvious thing is the deterioration of the American health care system. Thus, this discussion focuses on ethical principles that are violated in the film.

One of the ethical principles being violated is on insurance coverage. The American health care system is run for profit, and the insurance groups keep denying claims or coverage. The insurance companies were initially started so that the middle and lower-class citizen who could not afford the medical bills could be covered. However, from the film, this is not the case. This principle is being violated because people who thought they had adequate coverage are denied the care. This is because the insurance group don’t insure their members. They look for alternatives to get out of such situations. An interview conducted with a former employee of an insurance company reveals that physicians are given bonuses to find reasons for the company to avoid meeting the policyholders’ medical cost. One thing that can be done to help the American health care system is by coming up with new policies that will ensure the policyholders receive the coverage they deserve. Also, those who violate this policy should be punished.

In conclusion, there is much to learn from SICKO. Viewers can understand how the American Health care system is run for profit and insurance companies that pay bonuses to their employees who deny claims or coverage. Good health is vital for the citizens, and it is high time for the government to act before it is too late to save its people.
