sins and injustices that occurred when the catholic fraternity was involved with the Canadian residential schools
I’m writing to you concerning your decision of not apologizing personally for the sins and injustices that occurred when the catholic fraternity was involved with the Canadian residential schools. I was kindly asking if you could reconsider your decision on the apology.
According to the reports, the operation of the Canadian residential schools was unfair and unjust. It is seen that students were forced to attend the schools by the priest, Indian agents, and police officers. The students were also abused and assimilated into Canadian society, abused physically, emotionally, and sexually. Students went back to their families feeling outcast because of the poor skills that they were being taught in those schools.
The church has teachings on several social wisdom and states that human life is sacred. It also states that human beings should treat each other well in all stages of human development. If the students were not forced to go to school nor abused physically, they would be more open to going to school. Every Catholic has the responsibility of ensuring human rights are protected to ensure a healthy community. The community should ensure that students are taught well to reduce disparities between their home and school cultures. God’s creation is sacred and should be cared for to show the utmost respect to the creator. In this regard, physical and sexual assault don’t go hand in hand with the teachings.
I think that despite what happened and the decisions that were made in the past, an apology will be of help to the people who suffered. It will show how remorseful you are with the people who suffered and be open to forgiveness and make reconciliation with the parties. As a way of showing solidarity to your community, writing the apology will help in building the community.
