situations present us with tough decisions to make
Many times in life, situations present us with tough decisions to make. This becomes an enormous challenge in a situation to one since these decisions might leave us with far-reaching and painful consequences in our lives. Therefore, to avoid such regrettable consequences, one has to go through the pain of making some of the most unimaginable decisions in life.
This became clear to me in 2013 after receiving disturbing news about my closet friend, Henlet. Having left home for college, I looked forward to the closure of schools to return home and meet with my best friend, Henlet. However, this never became the case as I hoped; news reached me in college that my best friend had died under unclear circumstances. Those who were with her at the last moment recorded a statement that she had committed suicide in her boyfriend’s bathroom. However, most of us who were her closest friends knew that Henlet and her boyfriend had always experienced minor disagreements. Being her best friend, I had to put with the discomforts brought about by this way of the relationship between Henlet and her boyfriend.
I had to painfully leave school, missing my CATs, to go home and attend the burial of my best friend and closest friend. After the burial, police investigations revealed not much detail to help scatter the myth that surrounded the death of my best friend. Her family members went ahead with the help of a civil rights activist organization to institute legal action against Henlet’s boyfriend, claiming they needed no evidence to know that he was the one responsible for the death of my best friend. Though the death of my best had been a deadly blow in my life, having lost one of the most important, caring, loving, and closest people in my life in just a span of months. A friend I could confide in and count on, she formed a very big part of my world.
One day before I left for school, I called Henlet’s boyfriend and asked him, “Could Henlet have hated us so much that she decided to terminate her own life without sharing with us what she was going through? Didn’t she ever enjoy our company?” After a long and uncomfortable silence, he replied, “Life challenges us with puzzles, some of which are beyond us, and only God can find the answers.” I went back to school feeling sad as memories of good moments with Henlet kept flowing in my mind. It was the hardest moment in my life to accept that Henlet has left us, and I will never see her again.
