Social learning theory

           Social learning theory is recognized as a theory, which combines cognitive learning theory and behavioral theory, which assume that learning is based on environmental stimuli. Social learning theory points out that people are made to learn from each other via imitation, observation, and modeling. Social learning theory is popularly known as a bridge between cognitive and behaviorist learning theory since it encompasses motivation, memory, and attention.

Overview of Social learning theory Methodologies

Albert Bandura (2016) recognizes the mediating process to occur between stimuli and response. Besides, Albert Bandura suggests observational learning as a way of learning behavior from one’s surrounding. For instance, children are well known for their characteristic of observing the people around them behaving in various ways and ending um imitating them. In such cases, those individuals whom the children observe are referred to as models. Children’s models include parents within the family, teachers at school, characters on children’s TV, and friends within their peer groups (Bandura, 2016). These models, time to time, provide certain behavior for the children to observe and imitate. As a result, children pay attention to some of these models and encode their behavior and may, later, decide to mimic the behavior they have observed.

Social learning theory is popularly known as a bridge between cognitive approach and traditional learning theory. Social learning theory’s main concentration is on how mental factors are involved in a different type of learning. For instance, the theory suggests that human actively thinks about their behavior and the unforeseen consequences because of their behavior. Consequently, observational learning becomes almost impossible in the absence of cognitive process at work. The mental factors intervene in the learning process, therefore determining whether there is a need for a new response at any time (Bandura, 2016). For instance, individuals do not automatically subscribe to observe models behavior and imitate it immediately. The thought before imitation, which occur between the observation of the behavior and imitating and no response exist, making it a process.

The SLA assumes a thought process accountable and precedes by acknowledging the role they play on whether a certain behavior should be imitated or not. Social learning approach further provides a well-organized explanation of human learning through recognition of the part of mediational processes. Centrally, SLT cannot account for how human develop the whole range of behavior such as feelings and thoughts. Social learning theory (Bandura, 2016). SLT does not explain all behavior. Such cases arise when no role model in one’s life could have been imitated for a given behavior. In other cases, social learning theory fails to describe behavior solely in terms of nature since it is perceived that behavior is because of interaction between nature (biology) and the environment.

In criminal justice, there are a few theories that are designed to clarify why individuals act in a certain manner. A Major theory in criminal justice is the Social Learning hypothesis. Social learning hypothesis was created by Albert Bandura and had the fundamental suspicion that conduct is found out through involvement or the perception of the conduct of others (Bandura, 2016). Social learning hypothesis structure is profoundly established in fulfilling and rebuffing practices with the end goal for them to be educated. Social learning hypothesis consists of four segments that include four procedures. The procedures of Social learning hypothesis are the Attentional, the Retentional, Behavioral production, and Motivational production. Bandura made some incredible commitments to the investigation of observational adapting; however, his speculations do not clarify each part of human conduct.

Conclusion

The social learning approach considers manners of thinking and recognizes the job that they play in choosing if the conduct is to be imitated or not. SLT gives a progressively thorough clarification of human learning by perceiving the job of mediational forms. According to Albert Bandura, the social learning approach can clarify some very mind-boggling conduct.  Social learning approach cannot account for how we build up an entire scope of conduct, including contemplations and emotions.
