SPORT MANAGEMENT PROJECT

Background

During March 2015, our organization Sportsystems, Inc., a global provider of IT services and solutions in the Sporting domain received a request for proposal from Association of Control for Cricket in India (ACCI) for a Cricket Tournament Management System – with features like live scoring, match results and scorecard, automatic statistics, batting rankings, bowling rankings, tournaments points table, players information, and other statistics-based charts. Upon receiving the request, our organization’s marketing team worked closely with a Technology Architect and project managers. It came up with a quote for the Cricket Tournament Management System along with high-level solution design and timelines for the project.

In June 2015, Sportsystems, Inc. received a confirmation from ACCI about granting the project to us and requesting us to initiate the project. Also, as the next steps, they asked us to provide a detailed solution design document presenting the look and feel of the features that will be available in the Cricket Tournament Management System. Following this notice, a project team was picked by the Project Manager and a Technical Lead was assigned to work in consultation with the Technology Architect to present a detailed solution design – that will consist of 2 documents – one to include the prototype of the web design that will be used for the Tournament Management System and another material to present the data model that will support the system. This document will discuss the data requirements for the proposed Cricket Tournament Management System.

Purpose

Sportsystems, Inc. is designing a Cricket Tournament Management System that will allow ACCI to completely manage the vast amount of information and live data that will be associated with a Cricket Tournament. The system will primarily include the features like Live Scorecard, Full Scorecard, Player Statistics, Tournament Dashboard, Points Table, and Player Search – but not limited to these. The purpose of this project is to design a reliable and scalable data model on top of which the Cricket Tournament Management System can be built and also capture the data requirements for the system.

Data Model

The Cricket Tournament Management System will deal with a massive amount of information with a well-defined association between each piece of information. This type of project calls for an Entity-Relationship data model, which can be used as a design plan by the database developer to implement the data model. Also, the ER data model will visually represent the data objects associated with the system, which will, in turn, help the web developers of the system during the execution phase.

The main entities identified for the proposed Cricket Tournament Management System are:

  • Tournament
  • Teams
  • Person
  • Fixtures
  • Ball_by_ball_details
  • Person_role
  • Fixture_type
  • Ball_result_types

The system of managing the whole tournament is aimed at ensuring that a successful event takes place. There are so many factors that aid in achieving a sports management project and ensure that everything goes on smoothly without interruption. There are so many sports around the world which need to be appropriately managed.

PROFESSIONAL SPORT TOURNAMENTS

  • Professional leagues failed to capture public interest or attract golf professionals
  • Attempts to generate gate revenues at tournaments failed
  • The stability of tournaments was achieved when prize money was put up by companies and corporate sponsors.

Corcoran’s Tournaments

  • Fred Corcoran: Architect of the golf tournament

  • Used athletes and golf tournaments to sell advertising space to the public
  • Pro-Am was created by Bing Crosby in 1934
  • Pro-Am brought more attendance and attention to golf.

Corcoran’s Tournaments Continue After War Ends

  • Charities encourage volunteers and good publicity for tournaments
  • Golf equipment manufacturers paid Corcoran to create golfer association and arrange tournaments using prize money as player payments to reduce the cost of hiring player representatives
  • 1950s press changes policy and begins naming tournament sponsor not location free publicity

Tournaments Today

  • Golf tournaments have evolved into corporate celebrations of golf and products
  • PGA Tour viewed as a private group
    • Set rules of eligibility
  • Associations not as exclusive as private clubs (Casey Martin)
  • Trend moving away from nonprofit private associations and toward marketing agencies and/or broadcast media
