Last night, a 21-year-old female student from Baptist Univ., name unknown, was admitted to Baptist hospital with a severe case of food poisoning. “The admitted student is now in stable condition. This was probably the worst case of food poisoning I have seen in a long time. She must have eaten something nasty. But we aren’t able to determine exactly what it was that she ate,” said Jane Chan, Baptist university hospital nurse. According to her friends, she ate at the school canteen for dinner for about 3 hours before getting sick. The case reached the Hong Kong Department of health through an anonymous tipper that the student canteen was responsible for the girl’s food poisoning. This made five health department officials surprise the canteen on the old campus today, where they discovered the canteen violated 15 sanitation requirements. Some of the violations included no soap in the bathroom, canteen workers preparing food without gloves, no hair nets, workers smoking in the kitchen, meat not stored properly, use of expired food products, and no proper cleaning products. This made the old canteen to be closed down, a statement made by Director of Health, Dr. Ping-Yan LAM, “The University Canteen is closed until further notice due to violation of certain health code regulations. We have no other comment at this time.” Health officials also discovered that some of the workers were keeping a family of rats as pets.
Health officials also discovered that some of the workers were keeping a family of rats as pets, “This was a pretty bad case. I’ve never seen anything like it. The rats were huge – almost the size of small dogs,”- unnamed health department official. The rats had a nest in the kitchen, and workers were regularly feeding them meals with university food. One of the rats was nicknamed “Lucky” because workers believed it could accurately predict Mark 6 (HK lottery) numbers. Steven Chang, a canteen worker, stated that “Sure, we had a few pets in the kitchen. But everyone does it even over at Chinese University. I hear they have a family of cockroaches as pets. That Lucky was something special. I won 250$ last week on the Mark because of him.”
