Stance on problems with too much screen time
It is impossible not to talk about issues with screen time, given the fact that technology is used in every activity. This means that a significant percentage spend more time either on computers or phones. To add to that, some avoid using phones most of the time, but they still watch television. Several issues are associated with too much screen time, such as poor sleep, impaired cognitive and vision problems. Thus, this paper has provided a summary of three articles that address the problems related to too much screen time.
Phones making people Zombies
Mackenzie Carro, (2018). Are Phones Making Us Zombies? Experts say too much screen time is causing us harm. Here’s what you can do about it.
Several things are addressed in this article that shows how young people can be related to zombies. The author has defined what smartphone addiction is by stating that it is constant interaction with the phone. This addiction can be related to alcohol or drug addiction, where the victims cannot function without having a phone. According to Carro, those are risk are the young people where a sense media survey which was done in 2016 revealed that 50% of teenagers and kids were addicted to their phones. The biggest challenge which is addressed is the smartphones that found their way since 2007 and marked the beginning of addiction. This is because phones are used to wake people in the morning; they give them directions, provide information, and connect people with friends and relatives. Thus, it is difficult to operate without phones, and that is why people have become like zombies because they do what their phones tell them to do.
Screen Time and Depression
Wang, X., Li, Y., & Fan, H. (2019). The associations between screen time-based sedentary behavior and depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis. BMC public health, 19(1), 1524.
The purpose of this article was to show people the association between screen time based sedentary behaviour and the risk of depression because, since the introduction of computers in the 21st century, depression issues have increased significantly. Different methods were employed in data collection, such as the use of electronic databases from healthcare organizations such as Medline, Cochrane library, and Embase. The study concluded that ST-SB that were associated with depression varied across populations.
The social and emotional cost of technology on Adolescents
Katherine Lynn DeWeese, (2014). Screen Time, How Much is Too Much? The Social and Emotional Costs of Technology on the Adolescent Brain
This is research that was done by Katherine back in 2014. The purpose of the study was to show how the media was affecting adolescents and if it was making them emotionally or socially active or inactive. Data was collected using questionnaires that were given to the students. The results of the survey showed that only one out of forty students did not own a phone. Those who had phones were constantly sending and receiving messages.
Conclusion
There is much to learn about the problems associated with screen time, and the three articles above have addressed the issue in a significant way. People can no longer go back to analog when phones were not available. The best thing to do to avoid more health issues is to limit the time used on the screens, be it a phone computer or a TV.
