Surface-level error
The first surface error is missing punctuations. The second line and third lines in the first paragraph left out commas before the words “and.” It made the sentences lengthy without being broken into two.
The second surface level error that I took note of was the poor spacing after a full stop. In the concluding paragraph, the author does not place the required space between the second and third lines, i.e. “…and I found two sources for the paper. However, I also encountered the challenge of cultural barriers because I knew…” The same error is spotted between the third and fourth lines, i.e. “…British history in the 19th century. If I am going to do a collaborative…” These sections could be rewritten as “…and I found two sources for the paper. However, I also encountered the challenge of cultural barriers because I knew…” and “…British history in the 19th century. If I am going to do a collaborative…”
However, the surface errors did not affect the ease of understanding the information being communicated. I feel like the punctuation errors were minor and could be fixed with a brief proofreading session.
The errors are, however, critical since they break the flow of the sentences or make it uncomfortable to read the text out loud. The lengthy sentences would make one run out of breath without a comma at the right place.
My overall assessment of the excerpt would be a 9/10 due to the minor errors committed.
Practice One
On reading the paper, I realized that there were some words such as smog that were used repeatedly. Such words could be changed to fog or pollution to make the paper better. Such changes would also improve the variety of vocabulary.
Practice Two
When it came to checking errors, I made use of “Grammarly” and found various suggestions of using different synonyms to improve the vocabulary. However, not all ideas could be used since some of the suggested words would alter the intended meaning.
Apply
The paper would have been almost perfect with a bit of proofreading and being peer-reviewed by a classmate. Giving the paper to a different person to go through it would make it easier to point out some of the minor mistakes and improve the overall quality and grade of the excerpt.
