My short-term goal is basically to complete my academics with the highest grade possible in the field. Essay #1: Explain how you are currently financing your education and why you are deserving the scholarship?

I come from an ample background and my parents are not in a position to pay for my school fees because they are in subsistence trading back at home and the cater for the school fees and wellbeing of my other siblings. I basically am trying to excel in order to assist them to shoulder some of the responsibilities they are currently having. They work really hard for little pay which simply caters for their basic needs. I have been trying hard to balance my studies and ensure that despite the challenges I am having, I remain steadfast and determined to achieve my goals in life.

Currently, I finance my education using financial aid, loans and I work part-time and weekends to be able to complete the deficit and also sustain myself. To achieve my short term goal as a student, I will need undivided attention to my studies which currently I do not have. Working part-time really drains the energy out and I tend to balance between work and academics which is becoming tedious. With this scholarship, I will be in a position to focus more on my studies and ensure that I achieve my goals of attaining the highest GPA. This is the most important goals because it is the basis of my other professional goals. This scholarship will be a blessing to me because it will ensure that I attain what have always wanted and it is simply to complete my education in a smooth and seamless manner.

Essay #2: Briefly describe the most significant leadership role that you participated in at school or in your other communities. How has a female mentor impacted you or how you have mentored and impacted other women personally and professionally?

I have participated in different volunteering programs both here in the United States and back at home where I was able to exercise my leadership and people skills. Here in the United States, I participated in volunteering program at a home for the elderly and I led the team 20 of high school girls who had the urge to volunteer and help others get a smile. I led the team perfectly and in a manner that ensured that there were synergy and cooperation. I organized events and also led the program of lobbying for support through key fundraisers that helped secure more blankets and food for the elderly. In addition, we managed to get 10 wheelchairs, mobility walkers, crutches and walking aids for the elderly who did not have the capacity to walk on their own. It was gratifying to see a smile in the face of a helpless grandfather and grandmother.

I come from a society where male chauvinism is at its best leaving female gender on the disadvantage. Most of the girls and women in the society where I come from end up being married at a young age either willingly or by force. The picture of this is quite disturbing and I have always wanted to break out of this barbaric system of society. My mentor is my aunt who rose through all the obstacles and became a medical doctor. She could always tell me that society was there and should not be the reason for conforming and settling for less. Her wise words together from the support from my parents ensured that I continue pursuing my dream. Personally, I have impacted the life of my younger sister and other girls from my community who are now studying hard to ensure that they follow their path and revoke the backward culture.
