Taking flight
Upon the r4eview of the Taking flight by Octave Chanute, it introduces the space transportation with simple descriptions, citing the advantages of airplanes over other modes of transport systems, among the highlighted advantages being its speed and laxity involved with airplanes.
As documented by Garrison and Levinson in their publication of the transportation experience, policy planning, and its development. The article highlights the developments and advancements of transportation systems, most specifically air transport in the United States and European countries. He termed as mature transport system compared to other continents as he referred to other countries as still being in the planning and developing phases.
The article, undertaking a flight section presents a case example of a family of Trippe a descendant of seafarers who lived in Maryland. Juan Trippe together with other three friends, William, Cornelius, and Yale joined the colonial air transport after the fall of Long Island airways in 1922. At the time Colonial Airlines was the major supplier between Boston and New York. Trippe being enthusiastic and ambitious, used his contested second name “Juan” to join the Latin American market. In the wake of 1927, Trippe had already founded an aviation corporation of the American company and used his name to gain landing rights on different countries and markets where4 his competitors could not access. This strategy earned several landing rights including the Cuban landing rights signed by the then Cuban president Gerardo Machado. However, despite having the landing rights it did not have planes to execute operation thus he joined with other competing firms that had planned but landing right. The company exponentially expanded in that by 1928 the company was in control of Florida, Havana. By 1945, Trippe had developed the aviation company and was flying passengers to a couple of destinations, with different traveling classes established. Introduction of tourist class in 1945 scared his main competitor IATA and this made Britain close Pan Am airport forcing the airline to fly to Ireland through Shannon Airport.
Trippe introduced Boeing 707 in 1958, by this he revolutionized the space transportation system since Boeing 707 was twice the maximum carrying capacity and was much faster. He created a jet-set with trans-Atlantic jet services. As a challenge, Pan Am developed the Boeing 747 with a larger capacity to outmatch Trappe’s Boeing 707 and thereafter the competition in airline transportation become even stiffer with every company making inventions and advancements to be the best among others.
Just like any other technological experiment always have a false start, flights also started the same way back in 559 when the emperor’s son made some experimentation with a kite. But through ages and centuries, airline transport has developed into a magnificent and highly valued mode of transport connecting continents within the least time compared to any other means available. These developments took precedence in Europe, the US, and the UK. To other countries who followed suit borrowed from the gain and mistakes of the pioneer countries to enhance the experience associated with transportation networks. Therefore the article presents an insight into the experience in the development of airline transportation systems through time to more advanced planes and systems we currently have.
