Technology continues to proliferate, and the responsibility to control the various threats it poses lies on the shoulders of different stakeholders, including tech organizations and governments. Technology has brought about many promises and benefits and has to be protected from the ever-increasing threats to its advancements. Governments and tech organizations have to collaborate and work as a team to handle and adapt to the innovations brought about by technology. Governments have to manage technology by acting swiftly and stay abreast with the speed of innovation that affects communities and brings change to the world (Smith & Browne, 2019). Basically, all users of technology should take responsibility for protecting technological growth by actively contributing to curbing its threats. This paper discusses how the hopes technology provides can be safeguarded against the very real risks it also presents.
Discussion
While expansive digital evolution presents great promise, the world has reached a turning point. Different people around the globe have changed information technology into not only a powerful instrument but also a dangerous tool. For this reason, new techniques are required to manage a period characterized by even more dominant innovations such as AI (artificial intelligence). Organizations that design technology should bear higher responsibility for the future. Governments should also take the role of regulating technology very seriously to ensure that it is only utilized for the right reasons. Despite the many benefits that technology brings about, there are also countless challenges such as cyber-crime and crime-war, inequality, privacy issues, moral problems associated with AI, and issues to do with social media (Smith & Browne, 2019). To safeguard the hopes provided by technology, everyone has to take responsibility and ensure the correct use of technology-based on various regulations that uphold security and efficiency.
The YouTube video ‘An Evening with Microsoft President Brad Smith’ explores the way technology has grown to affect the whole world and what is expected of people, organizations, and governments to keep it going. Some people are exploiting it to better lives while others capitalize on its weaknesses to harm individuals, organization, and even the whole world. In the video, Brad Smith, who is Microsoft’s president, holds a belief that when different technological innovations change the world, everybody involved bears the role of help in advance its benefits as well as threats associated with it. The conversation focuses on some of the trickiest challenges the industry and society face today. Smith’s opinion is that organizations like Google, which are the most influential in term of technological advancements, need to take an active role in safeguarding the hope associated with technology against the threats to it.
Technological advancements provide substantial social as well as economic benefits, increased productivity, and enhanced efficiency in various industries. Different actors should identify fundamental principles and values, such as equality, transparency, equity, and accountability that can be negatively affected by multiple technologies to promote technological benefits. These actors should also come up with strategies to protect these values. This requires continuous improvement and monitoring to make sure technologies do no worsen the current inequalities and privacy issues. Also, stakeholders, including researchers, legislators, civic actors, business leaders, and regulators should act responsibly and efficiently to the outcomes and impacts of technological innovations and the possible societal threats they present. Furthermore, there is a need for new approaches to policy and regulations. For instance, advances in AI, ICT, biotechnology, machine learning, and their connections are already propelling versatile discussions regarding the focus and grounds for pertinent policies and the best form of regulations (preventive, reactive, preventive, or all). Finally, new systems are required to promote oversight, accountability, and transparency. Tech corporations and firms should be open to greater scrutiny since this will identify gaps to help in putting in place more appropriate regulations to advance hopes in technology while addressing various threats (Kavanagh, 2019).
