PURPOSE: Persuade government decision-makers to invest in eliminating plastic pollution
CENTRAL IDEA: Eradication of plastic pollution from the environment
PREVIEW: Plastic pollution is a threat to life
INTRODUCTION: The continued production and use of plastic products have led to their accumulation in the environment. This accumulation has resulted in adverse effects, including loss of life for both marine and wildlife.
SIGNPOST (Transition): Eradicate plastic pollution and save lives
- (Main Idea #1.): Plastic pollution is a threat to wildlife and marine life
- (Support #1 for Main Idea #1): Threat to wildlife
- (Detail for Support #1 for Main Idea #1): Ingestion of plastics
- (Detail for Support #1 for Main Idea #1): Entanglement by plastics
- (Support #2 for Main Idea #1): Threat to marine life (Eriksen et al., 2014).
- (Detail for Support #2 for Main Idea #1): Ingestion of plastics
- (Support #1 for Main Idea #1): Threat to wildlife
(Detail for Support #2 for Main Idea #1): Suffocation by plastic products
SIGNPOST (Transition): Address the environmental nuisance effect of plastics
- (Main Idea #2.): Plastics are not only a nuisance to the environment but also hazardous
- (Support #1 for Main Idea #2): Plastic pollution is an aesthetic nuisance
- (Detail for Support #1 for Main Idea #2): Accumulated plastic waste is known to be an Aesthetic nuisance on land
- (Detail for Support #1 for Main Idea #2): Aesthetic nuisance on water bodies
- (Support #2 for Main Idea #2): Hazardous effect and a threat to human health (Moore, 2020).
- (Detail for Support #2 for Main Idea #2): Plastic pollution may result in clogging of drainage systems, which in turn leads to floods.
- (Detail for Support #2 for Main Idea #2): Chemicals used in plastic production leach into the environment and cause health problems to both humans and animals
- (Support #1 for Main Idea #2): Plastic pollution is an aesthetic nuisance
SIGNPOST (Transition): Plastic products can be a necessary evil
- (Alternative/Opposing Point of View): Plastic products have valuable attributes that make them suitable for human use. They are cheap, light, have great tensile strength, durable, do not react with most products, etc.
- (Refutation to Alternative/Opposing Point of View): The use of plastics comes at great cost to the land and marine ecosystems. They are a threat to both good health and life (Paul, Chatterjee, & Dutta, 2016).
SIGNPOST (Transition): In conclusion
CONCLUSION: Given the adverse effects of plastics witnessed on the environment, it is justifiable that they should be eradicated. This will save wildlife and marine life as well as ensure a healthy living environment for humans.
