Textual Evaluation
Humans interact more effectively due to communication. Communication is the process of relaying information from the source to the recipient through a medium. There are various media such as Emails, WhatsApp, Twitter, among the rest. However, the use of these media varies depending on the purpose of communication. Communication can be formal or informal. It is formal when it is official, whereas it is informal when it is unofficial. Official communications are always channeled through formal media, which is mostly the email. The unofficial ones are primarily used in WhatsApp and the rest. Besides, the use of these media differs accordingly from one person to the next. The variations are brought about by the relationships and personal spaces. For these reasons, tonal variations and the language varies depending on the age gaps. The reason for this is to make the communication more productive and to be understood better. Therefore, this study paper will be focusing on the intentional shifts made when using the following three spaces; Emails, WhatsApp, and Twitter.
Friends and family members are the closest people that we have. We mostly tend to check on them daily, or any moment we feel like checking on them. This has been made more accessible and efficient by the use of WhatsApp. The language that is used in this space is always informal and almost the same. However, the language that is used between friends tends to contain most of the slang and humor. The one that is used with parents is direct, simple, clear, and respectful. There is always no official language to be used in these spaces. It entails the use of vernacular and any other simplified language that can facilitate communication and bring clarity and understanding. This is because we know each other well and understand each other. For example, in our family, we always use English, Arabic, and Kiswahili, “broo, wea a yah, mama wanna yoh coz of de balance. Leta pesa nyumbani.” That is a sample of a message between my brother and me. It entails a combination of English, Kiswahili, and some slang. This is because it is a conversation between the related persons and almost the same age, and we understand the slangs. When it comes to parents, due to the age gap, they do not understand most slangs, and in that case, their use is irrelevant unless their meaning is explained or translated.
Moreover, the use of WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family is its ability to enable the connectivity and in-touch between the persons. Finally, the use of WhatsApp is not necessarily restricted to informal use alone. Still, also it can be used in official matters and there sharing of official information across the group. In this context, the official language is used with generalization if it is in an official WhatsApp group.
Emails are one of the communication methods that are widely used in the world. Just like a phone number, it has become a necessity. In academic space, it is the most used media between the students and tutors. The use of canvas mostly does this communication. As stated above, official communications are mostly made through emails. In academics, communication is always formal since it entails career development. It is official since it involves students and instructors, peers, and classmates. For example, “the course outline you asked for is attached below and be sure to share with your fellow students. In case of anything else, be free to email back. Thank you.” The language in this space is formal, specific, very brief, and professional.
On a similar account, the use of any unofficial words and tone may render the information effective in the canvas. This may lead to misunderstanding and misjudging of a person. Most students tend to make scholarly communication as official as possible, whether between the students and instructors or among the students. They do so to stay out of unwanted problems, to prevent the misjudgment and misunderstandings. Moreover, they ensure to portray academic discipline as career demands. Finally, it is essential to try and be relevant and stay more formal in scholarly communications in emails making sure to understand the space, age gap, and the intended purpose of interaction.
Finally, the use of Twitter is most enjoyed by the three. This is because it entails all the updates, news, fashions, slogans, and what is trending in the whole world. It also contains the memes, pictures, and most videos, comments of the followers that make it more impressive. In this space, people interact from all over the world, and each opinion counts as it is taken very seriously with fans and friends. A simple tweet like; “the brotherhood code does not necessarily mean to support even the rapist.” This simple tweet gathered a lot of responses. This is because the viewers are varied with different opinions, and understanding of the text varies between them. The language in this space differs accordingly. The mood and tonal variation accompany the relay of the information. Most people tend to use memes, GIFS, and emoji to express their feelings and reactions to the tweet. The Memes, GIFS, and Emoji are in such a way that they tend to cater to all conversations, moods, and feelings. Besides, most of the tweets tend to be more exaggerated and extravagant, depending on the attention one wants to create. There are those for sadness, happiness, anger, and the rest. However, since this is a mixed platform that connects people from all races, there is always a misunderstanding due to the languages used. Most people tend to use vernacular or their common language. To other social media users, this might be difficult to understand and may create misleading information. For that reason, most people tend to balance their language for inclusivity due to mixed followers.
In conclusion, human relationships are facilitated by effective communication. Moreover, effective communication is channeled through a medium. The formality of the communication dictates the use of a particular r media. Besides, language codes depend on space and age gaps between the persons involved in a conversation. Emails are significantly official and have very professional and explicit language. Students and lecturers mostly use emails for academic purposes and career developments. Whatsapp, on the other hand, is majorly used in various informal and partly formal ways. Most family members and friends use WhatsApp for regular communication and checking on each other. This is because it is made of engaging persons. Finally, Twitter is the most enjoyed and most used media as it involves people from all over the world and entails sharing and following the comments and reactions of people on a particular matter.
