the cause of the deadly COVID-19 disease
The coronavirus, the cause of the deadly COVID-19 disease that attacks the lungs, has caused widespread social and economic changes across the world. The novel virus, a mystery even to the best scientists and doctors, has caused global panic and financial crashes all over the world. Coronavirus has brought the world to a standstill, considering the virus’s ramifications, which include the closing of schools, places of worship, malls and markets. In addition, only essential services workers are allowed to move freely while the rest of the population is expected to stay at home. Social distancing, self-quarantine, and self-isolation have been the first-line choice of action chosen by governments all over the world, as prevention of new infections is the priority action against the coronavirus. Consequently, managing time at home during the quarantine season has been my biggest challenge.
However, I have adopted some coping strategies that have helped me stay productive and avoid anxiety. My first course of action when I realized I would have to work and study at home, while at the same time taking care of family, was learning on what to expect from prolonged isolation. For every negative aspect of loneliness and social distancing, I learned how to cope with it by looking at the positive aspects of separation, and quickly put these measures to action. In this way, every time I feel sad because of not being able to meet friends and relatives, I remember that this a time to get to bond with my family. In the spirit of family unity, I have developed firm routines for my family. These include the rule that morning hours are to be spent studying and doing personal work, while afternoon hours are to be spent helping each other quickly finish chores while socializing with each other. We also have games, like monopoly, and other fun activities we engage in together, including daily physical work out sessions, that keep boredom at bay. The goal of these activities is to keep us physically and mentally healthy while allowing us to enjoy family time.
Additionally, the COVID-19 period has created a lot of free time for many people, myself included, considering that there is limited interaction, movement, and socializing outside of the home. Consequently, I have taken the time to develop new skills by taking classes online on different websites. Some of the routines I adopted were to take up breakfast and dinner duties, during which time I experiment with new breakfast and dinner recipes that I learn on the internet. Furthermore, I have taken up photography classes to improve my camera and editing skills, and I can now shoot better photos and videos. Steeping out every morning and evening to capture the sunrise and sunset is one of my new found hobbies that gives me a significant thrill. Other skills I have acquired in this period include learning how to fix different car issues, as taught to me by my experienced parents.
The quarantine season has also offered me the opportunity to take a rest from the everyday rush- associated with school and city life -to reflect on my academic and career plans for the next five years. During this period, I have been able to review units covered in class and to grasp concepts that may have given me a challenge. Therefore, I firmly believe that it is possible to put aside the idea of isolation as being a purely disadvantageous position and to take advantage of the freedoms it offers regarding personal improvement and spending time with family.
