The chapter “The Sixties” and The Manifest Destiny
The Sixties
The chapter “The Sixties” is very informative because it traces the history of the conservative movement in America. It highlights the ideological differed that plundered the movement and how its proponents navigated their differences. Plagued by the socioeconomic, geographical; and philosophical differences of the 1950 and the 1960s, for instance, the Republican Party was forced to partner with local groups, journalists and conservatives intellectuals so as to achieve political power to gain political mileage. But even within the alliance, each faction still held to its individual agendas. In the end, however, conservatives were able to work together when they discovered that their division was putting them on the losing side.
The Manifest Destiny
The chapter is dedicated to the westward expansion of America. As Americans increased in numbers in the 19th century, they were forced to look towards the west in search of new opportunities and new land. Their expansion into new territories, however, meant that Native Americans had to be displaced from their original homes. The Manifest Destiny was criticized by, but America held on to it. With the expansion, the US was able to add new states into its union.
