Abstract and Findings
Communication is the act of exchanging information through writing speaking or using some form of media. There are two essential communication tasks of a police officer, such as giving evidence in court and receiving information while interviewing witnesses in a crime scene (Garner, 2019). How the police personnel conducts the interviews strongly influences the results of the interview. Doing this research will be essential as communication is a critical tool for our society. Not having listening skills or speak effectively could result in misunderstanding (Reynolds, 2019). It is with this reason that communication also plays an essential role in the lives of the police officers. For instance, with communication, it allows the police personnel to manage their evidence by interrogating suspects, thus gathering adequate data. Therefore, police can succeed in their investigation only if they master the art of communication. Police are also able to interact with the public well based on how good police officers with communication. Lack of communication skills consults results in misunderstanding and misjudgment. It could result in a wrongful accusation of the convict. Research shows that people react calmly and corporate when the police officers treat them with respect. However, people become rude and offensive when the police approach them rudely. It is crucial to have excellent communication skills as a police officer empowers them in the successful performance of their duties (More, & Miller, 2017). Moreover, most law enforcement officers have cited their ingredient to success as having practical communication skills. They use the skills attained to build trust, foster atmosphere with empathy and create transparency.
In law enforcement, an essential element for de-escalation is the correct use of communication. For instance, a police department in Clark’s town, New York arms the officers with words to prevent conflict (Barker et al., 2018). However, one challenges the police officer experiences when communicating to people dealing with addiction and have mental illness disorder. For this reason, special communication techniques will need to communicate with such people. While they are undertaking their courses, police officers are right on the virtue of empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand what another person feels (Whisenand, P. M. (2016). police must learn this as they deal with various types of people.
Moreover, it allows a deeper appreciation of what another person experiences. Consequently, it leads to positive interactions and communication between the police officers and people they are in contact with (Woods, 2020). Therefore, this study will focus on the importance of police personnel acquiring communication skills such as empathy, documenting among any others.
