The doctrine of the Church
The Issues Involved
Often the Church faces salacious and astonishing scandals. Then the scandals are broadcasted since they involve the church leadership. It is important to note that the Church is a haven for the spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically ill individuals. Hence, its leadership should have exemplary and commendable standards. When pastors live below pastoral standards, then the Church is doomed to fail, thus gets hurt when condemned by the world. How can the body of Christ reach out to the lost and heal the wounded if it’s sick? Ephesians 1:22-23 NKJV elucidates the high spiritual mandate given to the Church, “And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”
Lambert (2016) defines the bishop and deacon as the two offices in the Church. This scenario illustrates an issue where the elder violates his role. The pastor must be blameless, a husband of one wife, able to teach, hospitable, of good conduct, temperate, and sober-minded “(1 Tim 3:2 NKJV). According to Erickson (2013), the body of Christ is the biblical church image. For this reason, the pastor is not reflecting the image of the Church.
Moreover, he argues that the government of the Church in the scenario is not established. Besides, he illustrates that the Church comprises of different types of government; Non-governmental, Episcopal, Congregational, and Presbyterian. Erickson also advocates for the unity of the Church, which must be organic, fellowship, mutual recognition, and spiritual unity. It is evident in this Church, a wrong type of unity is established by the leadership. Hence, it can cause conflict and significant disunity for everyone. Pastors ought to be careful not to have a controlling and bossy mindset because it will hinder them from walking in humility.
What Counsel do you provide the Associate Pastor?
I would first inquire from the associate pastor his take before giving him any counsel. Also, I will find out how he feels concerning what he knows, ask how he found out, and read the doctrines and by-laws of the Church. Lambert (2016) defines the Church as the location and organization where truths studied find their abode. In counseling, the Church’s doctrines are paramount as they portray the ordinances, governance of a real church.
While counseling the associate pastor, I will ensure that he understands the exceptional charge and position upon him. He needs to recognize that he will be thoroughly examined. Moreover, the Church must function independently as church members depict that the Church is vital in counseling. Most importantly, as part of our appointment and call, we seek God through prayer and His Word. Since Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Handling sin and wrongdoing from a position of leadership calls for divine wisdom and God’s direction. The associate pastor should stand in the gap and seek God’s guidance and direction for the Church. Galatians 6:1-2 NKJV also says, “Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. With this in mind, I will encourage the associate pastor to confront the pastor concerning the affair confidently, regardless of whether he will admit or deny. It will undoubtedly be the start of a long journey entailing tears and pain if the Church will fully heal. Thus, it is kind enough to assure him that God’s grace will be sufficient for him and the church members. Lastly, I will make him understand the task that lies ahead of him, where I will prepare him in advance to be ready for his trust and faith in God will be deeply tested.
