The environment and you
The environment to me is the surrounding. It is the natural world around me, which includes the air, the land, and the water. The environment is what makes living possible as it allows all things to thrive. As human beings, we are surrounded by both living and non-living things, which are directly or indirectly affected by our activities. When our activities are dangerous, the environment around us suffers and in turn we too suffer. I think that it is the responsibility of every human being to take care of the environment and to coexist peacefully with all the components of the environment.
The topic of the environment generally interests me. I’m curious about what entails our environment, what man has done to the environment, and what he can do to make protect the environment. My favorite topics are however pollution and energy, especially the alternative fuels. Environmental pollution has been on the rise with the increased population and urbanization. While a lot of good things have come with the growth and development witnessed globally, this has come with increased pollution. I’m particularly interested in this topic because environmental pollution is the most common and urgent problem that most countries and organizations are fighting. The topic of energy and alternative sources of energy is interesting since it incorporates innovation and it involves the conservation of the environment. Learning about the different n types of alternative fuel sources that supplement or replace what we already have is informative. I am keen on these two topics since they are involving, both physically and mentally.
I have always been keen on the environment since I was young. My parents always took me to the park, the beaches and to the animal farm. With my grandparents living in the countryside, I often got the view of the raw, clean, and natural environment which was very different from the city. My very first exposure to the environment especially on pollution was in sixth grade when I joined the environmental club in school. In class, we had learned about taking care of the environment and how to avoid pollution but this was not clear until I joined the club. The environmental club involved learning about the environment and taking part in activities that ensured a safe and clean environment. Some of the activities included cleaning the school, cleaning the beach, and also cleaning some of the parts of the city. Through these activities, I noticed the harm that we human beings had done to the environment. Even with bins placed in most areas in the city, people still threw rubbish on the sidewalks and in the drainages. This did not only make the place dirty and unappealing but also blocked the drainages and was a health hazard.
In the club, we also learned about the different types of pollution and how they affect the environment and then how this affects our health and quality of life. I also learned that as young as I was, I had a duty and responsibility to take care of the environment. Through simple acts, I would make the environment cleaner and safer for me, my family and the generations to come. It was by realizing this that my interest in the environment grew. These experiences built my character and shaped my behavior towards the environment. It helped me understand the environment better, learn about my role in improving the environment, and also gave me the knowledge and information that would shape my life. This experience also made me a role model to my family, friends, and people I come across in preventing pollution and protecting the environment.
