The ‘Fifth Season’: An Excellent Fantasy Novel by N.K Jemisin
introduction
The ‘Fifth Season’ is more of an excellent sci-fi fantasy adult novel in this fantasy world the plot paints a picture of a vast continent kept together as there are mystical people who can control the earth. The end of each chapter is compelling, making one continue reading to find out what happens next to a character. Just like the character, the readers are struggling to understand what is happening in the events, and we have to wait and find out.
The plot of the Story
The special ones can feel the faults that have been created by human actions and lament on the destruction that has followed the modern civilization.
The watchers can be reffed to as guardian angels who see the fault lines deep with the earth’s crust. They can prevent earthquakes and tremors that could destroy the whole world by making volcanoes erupts.
He stands on a hill not far from the Black star Obsidian walls. From here, he can see most of the city, smell its smoke, get lost in the gobble. There is a group of young women walking along with one of the asphalt roads below; the hill is in a park, much beloved by the city’s residents. ( keep the green land within the walls, It advises stone lore, but in most communities, the area is fallow planted with legumes and other soil-enriching plants. ( Jemisin )
These people called ‘oregenes’ are not liked in this society despite the huge protective responsibility they carry. The whole earth has been taken over by a single state government that is presented as an oppressive rule and does not care about the disastrous destruction of the environment. The supreme government resides in a big city called Yemennes. It has started arresting all the oregens and keeping them in a camp where their freedoms are limited. Therefore, they have reduced protective capabilities and have to sit back and watch painstakingly at the imminent destruction of the whole planet. Some origins have managed to escape and now live outside state jails but, they are afraid to reveal their identity for fear of being tracked down and killed because of the powers within them.
The people of the world are scared of their origins because they need to siphon energy from people to power their abilities. Such people whose strength is siphoned ends up being frozen and dying.
The tag-line ‘this is the way the world ends for the last time’ is used repeatedly in most chapters to emphasize that the stillness of this world is quite prone to ending. The ‘firth season’ is the name they give to this process, so the repetition of the phrase is akin to repeating the process within this world. It develops the idea of a repeated ending, which is not a very convincing concept because a conclusion should be a once in a lifetime process. The end of the world is introduced by an idea that is going to be very important during future chapters of this novel.
The First Storyline (Mystical Seasons)
At the beginning of the book were being introduced to the five different seasons experienced in this mystical world. There are regular seasons, and then there is an abnormal season known as the fifth season. Every-time there is this season, a period of apocalyptic events occur from poison to acid rains, diseases, or insects that destroy the whole vegetation. A new fifth season has begun. The first character, a woman, has just discovered that Jija murders her son at the beginning of the firth. In a bid to avenge her son’s death, she tries to figure out where the killer has gone.
“First, a personal ending. There is a thing she will think over and over in the days to come, as she imagines how her son died and tries to make sense of something innately senseless. She will cove Uche’s broken little body with a blanket except for his face because he is afraid of the dark.”
The Second Storyline ( Mysterious Characters)
The second storyline introduces a girl named Syenite, living in the capital city in a camp where people known as fourth ringers reside. In the company, people prepare to get more power and strength, which is awarded by new rings in the fingers. She teams with a ten ringer to go on a mission to an afar way city that requires them to travel over long periods. While following her fault lines, a lot of awful things happen to her during the journey.
A girl named Damaya has just had her cover blown. The people have discovered that she is an origin fro Yemmenes, one of the guardians assigned to protect the Oregenes, comes to pick her, and take her to the facility know as a ‘fulcrum.’
The setting of the environment is a classical fantasy imitating the type of world they are living in today. There are rich environments, and then there are more desert-like environments that are mostly places to live. There are also many variations of the lifestyles of people in this book: different unnatural skin colors and hair types. The people choose partners according to where you came from, and breeding takes primary emphasis.
The Third Storyline (The Magic Systems)
They are a lot of unknowns within the magic systems unraveled at the end of this book. The magic systems are so complicated, even the characters within such scenes do not understand what is going on.
The abilities within the more genes are intuitive; there are guiding factors within them that, if they listen, help them protect the people, but if they go against them, they end up not being successful with their oregenes powers. The stone eaters are not even easy to understand, but the mystical magic systems are odd.
They are always talking about the ‘ground’ and its myths. The people of this world are focused downwards, and even physically, they don’t look up often. This nature allows them to describe what is happening on the ground and not what is happening in the atmosphere because their world is cramped, and they call it the ‘ Evil Father Earth.’
Conclusion
The three different storylines in this novel are very mystical and compelling. Not one is presented more compellingly than the other. The storyline at some point starts to overlap and intervene, making it so exciting and captivating. Although not all the main characters are on the same side regarding their opinions on nature, each character has a role to play in motivating a specific goal they were assigned to work towards achieving. At some point, they appear as allies. However, this does not mean that their missions are identical. Even though they are working together, at an individual level, every character has a goal in mind they are seeking to accomplish.despite their powers, these people are prosecuted and oppressed.
