The film of Heroic Spain
I was interested in the film of Heroic Spain that was produced in 1938. This is the period when a lot of propaganda was used to fuel chaos that led to conflict between different allies. Joaquín Roig’s effort was to use the film to create a narrative that would show that getting involved in the war would help the Spaniard defend their history and traditions. The film covered the events that were taking place during the war, but most importantly, how the war affected the national character and traditions of the Spaniards. Through the film, I could see how the war caused conflicts between nationalists and the imperialists. Just like the other previous film we learned in the past modules, this film used exaggerated and imagery to provoke the emotions of the viewer’s so that they get the message of the film. The film reflected the themes of nationalism, strength, and liberation, but I would stick to liberation. Spain was at war to stop humane treatment, such as religious prosecutions. I could see innocent victims killed and being affected by the war. The fallen soldier was not given decent send-off according to Spain traditions. So this film was to show the need for Spanishness to defend their traditions. Therefore I like the movie because it gave insight into the history and culture of Spain
