The government should take part in the couples’ decision-making process
In my opinion about Wendy McElroy’s article, the couples are making a wrong decision by trying to make the children deaf. This an apparent passing of a genetic defect to an innocent child. By subjecting this kind of problem to children later affects them in different ways, more so when it comes to studies where the children will have to use a different mode of communication, that is, a sign language. And this may hinder the child from participating in other activities. I can say this kind of decision is child abuse.
The government should take part in the couples’ decision-making process, especially where an aspect of life is involved, that may negatively affect its future citizens. The government should come up with the law that protects the newly born citizens. You can imagine having a country whose three-quarter of the population is deaf or blind by choice. That would be so insane. The government should step in and determine the reproductive decisions of its citizens. By this, they can reduce the death rates that occur during birth, as well as the number of disabilities. No one wishes neither requests to be born with a disability. The government should always step in to protect its citizens.
I feel sad and heartbroken when I realized that the couple in McElroy’s article had a son with partial hearing, and they chose not to have his ability to hear enhanced with hearing aids. A clear indication of an irresponsible parentinghood. No morally upright, caring, and loving parents would subject their child to that kind of life frustration in the future.
The children’s rights begin at inception since that’s when life begins. The parent’s right never ends because they remain to be parents with the responsibility of taking care of the children throughout their life.
