The Haunted House

The Haunted House presents an American story conducted by Charles Dickens and published in 1859. The house was a minor house in the midlist of a neglected garden square between Northern England and London. In a normal society, the ability to disregard always results from a reputation that something holds. The haunted house was a neglected house because of the status of being “haunted.”

The house was manned by heavy gates, which would open to touch the iron bars in the seizure of cold ice (Mengham, 2018). The surrounding of the house was a feeling of the unevenness of the cold that cobbled every path underneath the dead leaves. An oak tree stood outside the house which swayed by the wind in its surrounding. Out in the night, there a bright moonlight in the open sky that was visible from miles away. Every breath was chilly and misty following any attempt of exhalation.

Everything around the house was quiet to the extent of no more tree murmurs. No more leaves were visible since the wind swept them, and the owls became silent too. An old concrete stair and a doorway could be seen in the front door of the house. The outside look portrayed a tall and thin house, with stone walls that were dark grey. The stone wall was made of crumbling cement, which gave it a rough texture (Mengham, 2018). Around the house, there were climber plants that whirled up the walls hiding the beauty of the crafted stone-walled building and the drainage pipes channeling the rainwater from the roof. As a result, little sunlight could reach the inner rooms. A rattling sound of the windows could be heard as though they were almost falling apart. The wooden window frames were rotting slowly and gradually due to the infestations by the woodworms. A few potted plants stood next to the door, which was almost withering to death. Perhaps for many years, the door remained agape, or somebody was in the house.

The corridor was a dull place mixed with the smells of old age dust. Paintings of what looked like rich merchants hung up the wall. As you moved into the house, their eyes would seem to be following every step you make (Mengham, 2018). On the left, a dusty and old stair whirled up to the second floor. Every step on the wooden stair looked dangerous that you would mind your steps. More rooms were straight ahead, which looked like a kitchen and the left was a lounge area. There was a large stack of bookcases in the lounge capped in the century dust. No television was inside except a fireplace, black leather sofa, and two chairs. A thick choking smell of charcoal that was once used in the fireplace spread all over the room.

A shining moonlight via the windows could be seen from the kitchen reflected on the brown walls. Stained utensils spread on the surface. The sinks and taps made of brass were comparable to the 16th century fixed taps due to severe erosion. Every time a drop of water fell in the tub, there would be an echo in the entire house. The haunted house was indeed a neglected house (Mengham, 2018). The nature of the house and the inner reputation communicated a house which was fled after a dispute or a house whose owners were attacked and killed with no trace of a carcass or even human skeletons.
