The Impact of Global Health and Development Projects on Queers in the Global South
In some regions, ethnicity and religion play a significant role in the lives of the queer groups. For instance, Roman Catholic is a dominant religion that plays influences education systems as well as social constructions of its members. Similarly, there are ethnic groups or indigenous communities that may have been exposed to practices such as colonial rule (Horney et al., 2019). These influences have impacted how groups perceive masculinity as well as heteronomativity and have therefore shaped sexual identities along with social organizations in regions such as Latin America. For instance, men have historically been perceived as homosexual only where they lean towards sexual relations involving members of the same sex. In contrast, men in productive partner relationships were treated as homosexuals irrespective of the sex of their partners.
It is noteworthy that the postcolonial effects have persisted in regions such as Latin America. It has continued to influence reproduction alongside the adoption of programs that have been displayed in minority groups such as in the case of adoption of LGBT identities (Horney et al., 2019) (Horney et al., 2019). It has also limited how the locals construct their knowledge of gender as well as sexuality; thereby propagating the marginalization the groups that the identity constructions identity are not applicable.
Still, in the postcolonial era, the current LGLG identities, as well as communities, became notable in the Latin American region, particularly around the 1970s. The developments of such characters were influenced by different corners among them the Stonewall along with sexual revolution that was taking place in the US at the time. Likewise, Latin America witnessed the proliferation of movements that advocated for women’s issues such as use contraceptive pills and rights, industrialization, as well as expanding the coverage of education (Horney et al., 2019). Nonetheless, the queer groups were rare during the period. Despite strategies to limit or poorly portray contraceptive use, homosexuality, human rights activists fought to decriminalize homosexuality and increased awareness on reproductive health and sexual diversity as human rights.
