The issue of ethics at the workplace
The issue of ethics at the workplace and the need to meet the ethical requirements at the workplace has left many organizations and individuals under scrutiny. The news media, just like any other sector, is faced with the challenge of ethical issues. In particular, in the news, workplace writing is a key moral issue. A classic example of a workplace writing ethical issue in the news is experienced booming US news media that experiences an ethical deficit in writing. The current coronavirus pandemic has increased the severity of the ethical issue, especially in relation to the no-touch rules to curb the spread of the pandemic(Mcculskey). The essay below summarizes the ethical situation in US news at the height of the coronavirus pandemic relating to writing applying rule-based, utility-based, and rights-based systems to analyze the problem and a description of the response to every situation for the systems and recommended response action with a justification.
Indian media exhibits an ironic situation. It has defied a downward global spiral in traditional media across the world as it continues to grow in terms of publishing of the news, websites, radio stations, and television media quickly. Of particular interest is the news publication media in the country that, despite enjoying success in the industry it has failed to deal with unscrupulous elements at the workplace both by the editors of the news and the owners of the written media. The coronavirus has only made the worse the situation as written media in the country has become more ineffective. The no-touch rule, such as hugging that has compromised the emotional support of individuals, has put them to a more vulnerable position to mislead by the media sources (Mccluskey). The written media has also become more unreliable due to social distancing in the country and the rest of the world. Obtaining information from sources has become more difficult. The editors and owners of the media continuously manipulate the written news to meet their self-interests at parties aligned to them during the ongoing global contagion. They do so with the target of maximizing revenues with disregard of the audience that is feed with misleading information that is compromised. Delivery of written news media has also become difficult.
The utility-based approach can explain the situation in the US news media as it demonstrates that the Indian news media is motivated by utility maximization at the expense of factual information to the public (Christians, 12). The approach provides unethical conduct that arises when the expected benefits to the moral of the society are prioritized over profitability. The right-based approach also explains why the ethical situation in the US flourishes. The ethical situation thrives in the news media according to strategy due to freedom of speech that allows the US news media to mislead public information to the public thanks to the freedom of expression. The rule-based system that stipulates that ethical duties are either imperfect or perfect explains how the American news media is flawed in performing its duties during the ongoing historic pandemic (Mccluskey). The imperfect dispensation of written news to the public, as a result, presents an ethical situation.
The ethical response to the right based approach is ensuring that the American news media, especially editors and owners of the publication, prioritize genuine news over profit maximization. For the situation relating to the right based approach, the news media should not exploit their freedom of expression to mislead the public to maximize profits (Christians et al., 22). The news media should also be perfect in their written reports to avoid ethical issues. In the event, I was in a position to regulate the US news media I will have implemented and effected stern measures to all written news media targeting to maximize on their profits by publishing misleading information to the public. The strict measures will be associated with severe consequences such as legal suits and prison sentences that will deter the publication of compromised news during the trying times. Enacting such measures will discourage the perpetrators of misleading news for profit maximization as legal suits are associated with hefty fines and imprisonment. The heavy penalties will cause written in news media to fear to incur heavy losses in penalties.
In conclusion, written news media in India is faced with ethical challenges due to the greedy of news editors and written news media owners. Several systems can explain the unethical issue in the news media publication. However, with proper measures put in place, ethical issues can be eliminated. I recommend highly punitive measures culprits of the moral problem in India to discourage the bad habit in the country’s written media.
