The Lady with the Pet Dog.

The Lady with the Pet Dog is a short story by Anton Checkhov that tells the story of an affair. Alone on holiday at a seaside hotel, Gurov meets a lovely lady named Anna. Despite his contemptuous and sexist attitude towards all women, Gurov falls in love with her, resulting in an affair. At the end of the summer, they part ways and assume that was the end of their affair, but back home in Moscow, Gurov realizes he cannot forget his love and so he seeks her out and rekindles their love in hope to find some happiness together. The turning point in the story is when Gurov realizes that he loves Anna and makes the trip to St. Petersburg to look for her. Its significance is that it’s the catalyst to the story’s theme about secret lives and affairs. The ending of the story provides a sense that their love will be hard and over soon but worth it while it lasted.

Considering Gurov’s attitude falling in love with Anna is sympathetic, and his character though immoral it is likable in the way he falls in love. Anna chooses to involve herself in the affair because she was bored with her married life. Anna is motivated by the need to live, and her curious nature draws Gurov to fall in love.

True feelings and attitudes are often more evident in private away from the public domain. Considering Gurovs attitude towards women is changed by a secret affair proves that it is part of Cheknov’s message.
