The National Security Agency
The National Security Agency was established in 1952 under the presidential directive of Harry S. Truman. The NSA is a U.S intelligence agency within the Department of Defense; it is responsible for cryptographic and communications intelligence and security within the country’s defense system. It is located in Fort Meade, Maryland, which serves as its headquarters. While it operates under the Department of Defense, the NSA also belongs to the intelligence community, which mostly comprises a coalition of 17 agencies; hence, it also operates under the National Intelligence director. The National Security is always directed by a military officer of flag rank with a minimum of 3 stars. Among all the security and intelligence agencies in the United States, the NSA is the most secretive with its operations.
Since its formation, the NSA missions included the protection and formulation of codes, ciphers, and other cryptology to the United States military and other intelligence agencies with the United States. The agency also intercepts, analyses and offers a solution to coded transmissions by electronic or other means. In 1972, the Central Security Service (CSS) was formed to aid the National Security Agency in its operations, the director of the NSA is also the head of CSS.
Being the most secretive agency in the U.S., it is, therefore, no doubt that they would not hire anybody to work for them. From a simple definition of intelligence, which is the ability to think abstractly, challenge the unknown, and solve the impossible, the NSA requires one to be intelligent in his academics and capable enough to handle challenges and risks normally encountered within the agency. Working with the NSA offers the opportunity to work with the best, shape the course of the World and most importantly, secure your future. NSA employs some of the most intelligent and brilliant people to gather and analyze foreign and internal intelligence, protect the American information system, advance research and most importantly, solve some challenges within the U.S. security system.
Like any other professional field and agency, working for the National Security Agency requires getting a college degree. However, when aspiring to work with the NSA, not just any degree is applicable; it needs to be relevant to what the agency does. The NSA is known to hire mathematicians; hence, getting a degree in mathematics is a good option. However, the agency is limited to mathematicians; people who have degrees in computer science and foreign languages also have a high opportunity to be employed at the NSA.
Getting a security clearance is also another requirement of getting a job in the NSA. Getting security clearances can only be obtained through current and prospective NSA employers; as such, private individuals cannot apply for the security clearance on their own. Acquiring security clearance is the most difficult process; it can take up to two years, depending on the required level of clearance. To increase the chances of getting employed by the NSA, one must consider an internship at the agency; competition for jobs within the NSA is very stiff. Hence, one should complete internship programs from the NSA to increase their chance of getting hired; the agency offers three-year competitive programs for those interested in pursuing life-long careers within the organization. The program aims at training professionals at all levels of skills and experience; therefore, completing the internship programs is important in securing a job at the agency.
While the NSA rarely has problems finding suitable candidates for a job, it is also important for a job seeker to attend the agency’s hiring event that is conducted all over the country regularly. The hiring event is a perfect platform for an outsider to show their talents and skills since the NSA always picks the best candidates for hire. It is also important to note that getting a job at the National Security Agency is not easy; one might have the credentials needed and skills but end up not being selected for the job; hence, it is out of sheer luck.
Working for the National Security Agency is a dream job for many job seekers, as it presents people with a promising future. Also, working for the NSA also has a few advantages and disadvantages. For instance, there are paid training opportunities at the NSA; while taking training programs at the NSA, one enjoys the benefit of being paid during the internship period; this is one way the agency motivates its trainees to put more effort into their training programs. Presenting individuals with a multitude of professional fields is another advantage of working for the NSA; intelligence touches on many professions around the World, working for the National Security Agency presents individuals with the required skills and experience in gathering information and intelligence in different occupations such as the border security, private security and airline services.
Some disadvantages are associated with working for the NSA; these disadvantages are, in most cases, the testimonies of former employees who had the privilege of working at the agency. For instance, a former employee (senior intelligence analyst) reveled that working for the NSA has some benefits; however, there are no leadership skills in the agency, especially from the top bosses; the former employee said that there still exist racism and sexism in the agency; hence, making it impossible for one to advance in their careers. Another former employee (Electrical Engineering Co-op) also shared his experience of working with NSA; like many employees, the former employees also commends the agency for the great benefits and huge opportunities presented to them; however, there are many cases of xenophobia – for instance, if one was a contractor or part-time employee, important information regarding their work were withheld from demand were mostly treated like 2nd citizens.
Another disadvantage of working with the NSA is fewer holidays; no one knows when duty calls; some may be called when on leave while others tirelessly work to achieve their target. Working for NSA is a dream job; hence, it comes with a few challenges that one has to live with. However, for a person with the desire to work with the NSA, perhaps their operations at the agency might stop the urge of advancing your career. In 2013, the NSA was hit by a major scandal that revealed part of its operations at the agency. Edward Snowden, a former contractor of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), left the United States after leaking the media details of extensive phone surveillance by American intelligence. Edward revealed over 10 million phone records of Americans to the Guardian newspaper. Until this moment, the NSA has publicly denied secretly collecting information from the Americans.
In a court ruling, the court of appeal ruled that the secretly collected phone records of millions of Americans violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and was therefore unconstitutional. On his part, Edward, who fled to Russia in late May 2013, said on Twitter that the ruling was a vindication of his decision to go public with the evidence. The tweet is quoted as follows; “I never imagined that I would live to see our courts condemn the NSA’s activities as unlawful and in the same ruling credit me for exposing them.” while it is within the jurisdiction for the NSA to deny all the allegations or pieces of evidence presented by Edward Snowden, it is also undeniable that there were damages done on the surveillance system; the public has also lost some confidence on the NSA being the most secretive agency in America. It is proof enough that despite the government’s efforts to give its people freedom, the same government is also responsible for breaching people’s privacy.
In conclusion, it is a dream come true for one to work with the National Security Agency; this is because it comes with many benefits like higher pay, training programs that may also be applicable in other professional fields and the opportunity for career advancements. Working with the NSA does not only encourage self-growth; it is also a perfect institution that helps one performs their patriotic duties to their country. There is a big honor when presented with the opportunity to protect your country. However, it is also important to acknowledge that the agency also has some of its flaws, just like any other agency. Hence, it is your responsibility to decide what is best for your career; thus, one must weigh the pros and cons of working at the National Security Agency and determine what is best for them.
