The pride that Leads to Bad decisions
Hubris, a condition that has often gotten associated with disturbing traits such as recklessness and lack of self-awareness, is said to be a significant cause of bad decisions in one’s life. The book into the wild by John Krakaeuer is an essential story about one Christopher McCandless. The book gets to depict the lesson that too much pride subsequently leads to one engaging in risky behavior, which may result in consequences as grave as death. The notion about Hubris gets expressed through the following risks undertaken by the main character; Chris.
Chris wanted to dare himself to see if he could make it off the land, away from his parents. Therefore, he decided to take an adventurous and unprepared trip into the wilderness as a result of the scornful feeling he had against his parent’s lifestyle. Chris knew that by carrying a lot of necessities, it would not deem him the honest experience of life Chris may have wanted. Therefore, he left to the deserted place with scarce information on what he was to face. This reckless action substantially led to his demise as he ended up dying of starvation.
The risk Chris undertook was certainly not worth it as he gained nothing and lost his life. Was he to swallow his pride and listen to the people who tried to talk to him about surviving in such an environment, wouldn’t he have gotten prepared? His arrogance and pride were so toxic that it led to him facing life the hard way in such a lonely world. The risk would have been worth it if he survived the ordeal and came out with some lessons. It was therefore worthless for him to endanger his life, learn his experience, but still lie lifeless on the bus.
